Somewhere deep within the woods of Cornwall, a timeless force is stirring. Unseen beneath the ancient burial mound, known locally as Barrow Hill, a forgotten myth awakens. Following in the footsteps of the wellknown archaeologist, Conrad Morse, you will discover that the barrow is more than just a collection of forgotten standing stones. Experience the detailed and immersive storyline yourself, in this great point-and-click adventure.
The eerie Cornish landscape is brought to life like never before. Arriving during the Autumn Equinox you have one night to unravel a sinister story. Explore the well trodden pathways across the land, seek clues in almost forgotten shrines and experience the ancient forces which exist in the standing stone monument known as Barrow Hill.
Ancient Celtic Monuments: Standing stones are, perhaps, the most mysterious wonders of the ancient world. There are still no satisfactory explanations as to what they are, how they were built, and who constructed them. A detailed, and spellbinding, story is woven through the very fabric of Barrow Hill, offering possible explanations, further mysteries and a chance to get beneath the surface of archaeology like no other game before it.
Dig deeper: Use real archaeological techniques, and practice, to unearth forgotten artefacts and delve into the Celtic legends which haunt the green lanes of the hill. Cornwall boasts itself as the home of many sorcerers, ancient kings and mythological characters. From the piskie folk of the hedgerows and clifftops to the beasts of Bodmin Moor. There isn't a corner of England's most western county that isn't rich in folklore, magic and danger!
Features:
Discover a world of puzzles, archaeology and ancient rituals
Use gadgets to locate clues and communicate with other characters
Haunting soundtrack of creepy music and spine-chilling sound effects
I played Barrow Hill some years ago and really liked the experience it delivers. The story it tells and the world it portrays seem very realistic, the landscape you explore and the places you visit seem absolutely believeable, they are full of details and there is so much to deduce from what you see. The slow unfolding of the story is really well done. I also liked the many historical data the game has, the quite realistic information about archeology and celtic folklore. It was exactly the fact that the gameworld and its features seem so realistic, believable and even mundane that made the encounter with the eventual supernatural so impressive and fascinating for me. I don't want to tell much more about the game as it's one of those very few delicately designed games you have to experience directly. Just brew yourself a big cup of tea in a lonely dark night and get sucked into this fascinating adventure.
I’ve loved this game since it’s release, I even took the pains of creating the original Wikipedia page for it.
It’s the type of adventure you play at night, alone, when everything is silent around you. Since the game is not linear you need to explore, observe and follow your own thoughts while learning about local folklore and what’s happening in the surroundings. Everything helps immersion in this game, so if you like spooky, eerie settings I believe you’ll forgive the shortcomings and find that this game is worth your time.
If you like creepy 1st person adventures with supernatural elements and a bit of reading for background story, you 'll be right at the sweet spot with this!
More specific, if you've played Scratches or any of the Jonathan Boakes/Darkling Room titles (Dark Fall series, The Lost Crown) and liked them, go for it, by all means!
As always, playing with the lights out and headphones on is strongly recommended to level up the creepiness.
Take this review wither a pinch of salt. I am not an Adventure game player. I had to use a walkthrough to get anywhere in this game. Whether someone good at adventure games would find it well or poorly made I cannot say.
However. I am a huge horror junky who enjoys "quiet" horror, like the stories of M R James.
Barrow Hill is half M R James and half Nigel Kneale with maybe a little sprinkling of Lovecraftian technophobia. It's a dark game that drips with atmosphere. Little everyday things can just seem sinister and wrong. Gloom, darkness and hopelessness seem to drip from every pixel of it If you've ever walked down a rural road or abandoned house at night and wondered if monsters or something worse might be around and half wished there were you know exactly what this game is like....
It also has a beautiful soundtrack (Included with this realise) that I keep on my MP3 player. If nothing else, check it out for that.
I've been a great fan of these kind of games ever since I played Darkness Within for the first time. Barrow Hill is not totally different and that is what I wanted. Imagine playing Myst/Riven, but with haunted house theme, then you have Barrow Hill in a nutshell. I just finished it and I was very satisfied since I did not cheat at all and could still finish it out in 10 hours. Now I'm going for Barrow Hill 2!
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
