it's been a long time since I got to enjoy something like this, doom 2016 was really close but not close as amid evil it brings me back to old days it gives back the feeling of and good old fps shooters like doom or heretic. action, atmosphere, weapons, sounds, enemies. feels just right, if you are into these kinds of games this is definitely worth a try
I'm an older gamer who plays all kinds of modern games. I have played, and replayed games like Heretic, Hexen and Doom many times. Those are kind of core games for me. They had a certain sensibility and structure that never gets old. I had given up on anyone being able to understand that mix, until now.
For me, those factors were:
1) A real 3D world. Everything you see is "real" and can be jumped on or run in to. You are able to crouch or hide behind the environment.
2) Almost realistic physics. Meaning, overall very realistic. Unrealistic in ways that enhance gameplay like being able to run over small objects without jumping or falling from great heights without being killed. A decent jump/running jump. Water good. Fire bad and so on.
3) "Shots" fired at you can be dodged or avoided if you see them and are quick enough.
4) Enemies are smart enough to chase you, sometimes even to a different area or to open a door. But you can outrun almost all of them. Some are smart enough to circle behind. Each enemy has a distinctive sound when they show up or attack.
5) Levels are symmetrical, to some extent and puzzle orientated. Secrets are tough, but not mind bending. They are more about you paying attention than solving an obtuse puzzle. There are enigmatic inscriptions, throughout,
6) Very little in the realm of timed activities.
7) You can clean out an area of enemies so you can finish exploring it. Games where enemies randomly come back are very frustrating to me.
The reason i laid out all these features is because Amid Evil has all these things and more.. There are so many nods to those older games. Not only do I appreciate them, but it is so fun to come across them. So I don't want to spoil them for anyone.
Finally, the graphics are superb. Its fun just to run around a level that I've cleared just to look at it more closely. I bought this game on Steam. and GOG to make sure I always have a copy.
See if you don't love it too.
Amid Evil is at its best when you're up against a barrage of melee enemies and a few sparse projectile ones. So it's fair to say I had a bad time with the mage and final episode. The final episode was especially irritating. Just a nonstop blasting from these little ghost guys who are constantly rushing you, along with these bigger shmucks who have the ability to teleport you to them. The final boss somewhat made up for the agony I had to previously endure. All of that said I'd still play an Amid Evil sequel.
Very simplistic but still fun run-and-gun shooter of the classic style. Weapons are pretty unique as none of them is hitscan and they also have a fresh design, like a morning-star that shoots spikes. Reminds a bit of Hexen and the likes. They are balanced fine, most have their advantages and disadvantages, and they get a different behaviour in "soul-mode". Only the trident seems like a deathtrap as you have to focus on an enemy long enough to overcharge them, but usually there are other enemies that just run in front of him then and they lose without overcharge. Often it also feels more like "just lemme use my strongest weapon" being the right decision, it is rare that switching to one of the weaker weapons make much sense. But you will still use them kinda balanced, also just because they all use 4 mana-pools (speak ammo) where the green and the blue are for two weapons respectively.
The level design is great, definitely the best selling-point for this game. There are 8 worlds everyone with different themes and enemies and the architecture can go really wild and interesting. Some levels also have their own themes and none feel boring really. They are beautiful to look at and fun to play, also the secrets are well-hidden and there's also a small focus on some easy puzzles or jump-n'-running. The different enemies of each world behave differently, hey are pretty dumb and just run towards you mostly and can sometimes have issues with the weird level-design, but nothing negative really to say about them, they are fun to fight, mostly.
Graphics is good-looking, with the level-design and the unique enemies and weapons looks it makes for a visual feast. It isn't that well optimized though, and even on a good pc there are some hiccups with frames going wild once or twice in a level. And graphically some shaders feel a bit lazy and some lighting issues can appear.
I could say that the story is also very bland, but it works.
Good old-school fps!
Nowadays there are a lot of games claiming to be "old-school" and trying to mimic the classic FPS giants. There are only a few worthy instalment in my opinion, but AMID EVIL is definitely one of them. It borrows everything that was awesome in Quake, Heretic, Hexen and Painkiller, and fuses them into one dope game. The level design is fantastic, the music kicks ass, the weapons are fun to use (for god's sake, there is a weapon that shoots planets, how cool is that?), the combat is fluid, fast-paced and skill-based. The game uses the UE4 engine, so it runs like a dream. The graphics is pixelated but looks great at the same time - especially the lighting is beautiful.
So what are you waiting for? If you like the aforementioned classic FPS titles, there is no reason not to play AMID EVIL, like, right now. Support the devs and New Blood Interactive in order to bring us more awesome titles like this!
