I really liked this one. The world, the RTS battles and the vibe.
But it is in development. It is short. And haggling until you can buy bread is stupid.
More updates please.
You can only give orders to your units IF you have active messenger birds (limited number). So you cannot micromanage everything, which i found refreshing as it made you concentrate on your limited resources- So if you have a massive army, you wont control it all.. Some units will be sacrificed whilst you win on the other side of the battlefield.
A concern on this game design - you have to spend ALOT of money on food to allow you to travel-if you do not have enough food then the strength of random units will be penalised.
Be very interesting to see if PVP can be designed in. Be fun to battle another player.
Useful hint - forests and anything wood built can be set on FIRE and it spreads....
The game provides you with elements you may know from the "good old" Warhammer, the story is fine, the 'world' is fresh and interesting, but most of all, it contains a system of battlefield management which I find innovative and amusing. You can give only as many orders at one time as you physically can and just no more. It's reflected by number of messengers you have. Once the order is given you need to hope it was the right choice, as you will wait a while until a messenger is ready to go with another one. The battlefield is dynamic and full of surprises. That gives you quite a scent of a real 'medieval style' battlefield.
As others have noted, this game is a great little tactical battle game. It uses an innovative order system in which you have a fixed number of "messenger birds" that are used to deliver orders, after which they go on cooldown. So you have to plan orders carefully, since you have limited bandwidth to fix mistakes or engage in overly-elaborate schemes. It also punishes you harshly for wasting orders or trying to spam unit special abilities. This mechanic was definitely a breath of fresh air.
The scouting mechanic was also very interesting. When the battle begins you're presented with the zones into which the enemy may have deployed, and then its up to you to use various kinds of scouts to figure out which units were deployed and where. Again, an innovative and interesting mechanic, well-implemented.
The graphics are also very well done. They are clean, easy to read, and easy on the eyes. Icons pop well from the background, making the game easy to read, both on the tactical map and in town.
Overall, this is a game with a good amount of depth, and yet it is surprisingly easy to pick up and play, since there is not much of a learning curve once you've fought the initial tutorial battle. Highly recommended to anyone who likes strategy games, or even gamers in general, since this is a "light" strategy game that will ease you into the genre.
As others have pointed out, there is currently not enough content - one campaign that I finished in less than 2 hours including reloads, and that was on the hard difficulty. I am very much looking forward to more content from the developers, since that is what the game really needs at this point. Still decent value for money, but once the full content is finished this game will really be something special.
I played Early Access version 5.113. Hoping for much more soon!!!!
I really enjoyed this game! Hits the bulls eye for me. Tactical battles + strategic resource management + light story + quests + permadeath for units. Feels like Battle Brothers and Panzer Corps (with fantasy spin) in those regards.
The game has truly tactical battles where every move is vital. The setup and mechanics flow like a classic tabletop ancient battles game, even down to messengers to deliver orders, but plays out very quickly and smoothly. Nice variety of unit types already even in early access. Would love to see many many more. I love the iconography. I really love the clean graphics in this game. I can easily tell what different units are and what their statuses are. Sound and music are top notch.
Although I prefer true turn based, the real time speed is definitely manageable here, and you can see the whole battlefield very clearly all at once, so I must say I am enjoying the real time aspect! It works for this game.
I also enjoyed the strategic level of the game very much. Acquiring units and supplies was fun and challenging. The fact that multiple resources are grouped into "packs" was a neat idea, and helps to ensure you end up buying a good variety of supplies rather than just focusing on one type. The market is definitely a mini game in itself. The quests were fun, and I enjoyed the story line.
It may have been intentional and associated with rising evil in the land, but it definitely got to be impossible to buy enough food at the end, so I had quite a few deserters. I think I might prefer to have to pay the units money for upkeep as well as the food, but much less food, or have more food available, or perhaps more towns from which food could be bought. It's a good mechanism for keeping army sizes down though.
