Nice pixel art, meh puzzles, bad story

First to cover the extras: The artbook is 90 pages and while I would have preferred more early versions of the art and fewer pages of sprites and final screenshots I'd say it is above average. The music works well for the game (sound design is also decent), not even as repetitive as many games, however it isn't one I'm likely to listen to much outside the game. The pixel art is nice with background layers that move at different speeds. Sit on benches in various places to get a bit wider view. I didn't find the puzzles all that great, although a few make you think in different ways. I liked the overall storytelling style with lots of cutscenes and I hope the trend of story focused platformers continues. However, the story itself left almost everything to be desired. There is no coherent world at all, a chase where most of the characters involved can appear and disappear at will except when they can't, which is arbitrary. All characters major and minor have extreme personalities. I found the ending disappointing and arbitrary. The problem with fiction is that you can make anything up and this game is a great example of why that is a bad thing. I hit three bugs, twice where the game got stuck and needed to be closed and restarted (but hardly lost any progress) and once where I thought I needed to go back somewhere that I had made inaccessible (the only time that happend) and restarted the chapter, although it turned out I didn't need to go back after all. Controls are decent. It took me 7.5 hours to get through with about 3/4 of the hidden items. Speedrun mode just adds a timer, you can't skip the story to easily find what you missed. There are many games I'd recommend over this one. The most similar in overall style I'd say is Evan's Remains. Guacamelee has an alternate world. Wolfstride (not a platformer) has an over the top story that works. Also try: Little Bug, Webbed, 8Doors, Hollow Knight, Beatbuddy, 140, NyxQuest, A Short Hike, Cyber Hook, Even the Ocean.
