Set in the universe of Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, the game lets players witness and influence the events preceding the Black Day. Immerse yourself in a unique world full of dangers, unexplored dark corners, and looming evil beyond mortal comprehension.
Assume the role of a mercenary accompanying the enigmatic girl to the foggy settlement of Kingsport to uncover her family’s dark secret. You are shipwrecked and soon encounter the nightmares that have haunted this place for centuries. Would you be able to find your way out, keep your sanity, and prevent the coming of the ancient Outer Gods, or maybe being insane is the key to salvation?
Forbidden harbor
Explore the dark streets of the forgotten settlement of Kingsport, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Check its hidden corners and unlock access to new areas. Find its secrets, solve puzzles, open new paths, and unlock closed doors. Many locations await you: an old village, a mysterious mansion, dark mines, cemeteries, foggy forests, and, of course, an old lighthouse.
Survive the horror
You will be in constant jeopardy, rarely escaping from monstrous enemies and devious traps unscathed. Physical harm is far from the gravest danger, however, as all these perils will take a toll on your psyche, and your mind may be hurt as well. Any mental afflictions you develop will impact your gameplay experience. Stay on the lookout for materials and recipes and craft the tools, medicines, and remedies necessary to face the horrors around you.
Roleplaying mechanics
Choose your play style - unlock new abilities, find eldritch artifacts, and experiment with different ways to interact with the environment. You will always have choices and multiple paths to progress the story, but be prepared to face their consequences.
Impending doom
Player choices influence events unfolding in the game world, leading to various endings. Any wrong word or action may have irreversible consequences. The world reacts to how you develop your character, the denizens and hazards may react differently depending on your madness and chosen playstyle.
Stygian Legacy
Stygian:Outer Gods takes place in the original Stygian universe, therefore certain events in this game may provide a fresh perspective on events and characters from the Reign of the Old Ones.
Yeah, still Early Access, but for someone itching to play horror RPG that fully realizes what was promised with each previous Call of Cthulhu game - this is simply worthwhile and very satisfying purchase.
This game actually manages to bring back Lovecraftian horror in a decent manner and (as far as I can tell right now) doesn't have the issues that often plagued other titles in this genre. Lots of cool ideas and the overall decent state of the game makes me believe that this game could actually shine to its full potential on its release.
I did come across a few bugs here and there, but thats to be expected for an Early-Access title. For example the voicelines in conversations tend to echo at their beginning and then cut off shortly before completion. Sometimes they don't play at all.
Also I truly hope that they implement other types of AA, besides UE5s TSR and DLAA solutions. These are known to generate nasty artifacts and cause performance issues (which I can fully confirm). Generally speaking I hope the developers actually take enough time for optimization and don't just release it unoptimized with out of the box solutions like most studios do nowadays.
Well, time will tell. For now it is looking pretty good and i'm excited to follow the games progress until its scheduled release in 2026.
This game brings me back to 1991 and titles played on
a classic Mac with a single button mouse and no HDD.
Obviously the graphics and controls are much better, but the sensations are the mostly the same. The mix of horror and adventure is good--you certainly feel vulnerable to physical and mental attacks, and the pacing seems about right. That is, skills and inventory improve at a reasonable rate for RPG elements, and having multiple ways to solve most "problems" helps too. Overall, I enjoyed this early release wholeheartedly, with only some minor annoyances. Said annoyances may count as spoilers, so I am loathe to mention them here. However, having run out of storage space for in-game inventory, a "sale" option or maybe a "breakdown" into components crafting option would be appreciated.
Screws are falling out of my head playing this. I love it. I highly recommend it. Haven't felt immersion of this magnitude since RE7 or Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. I must solve the mystery or go mad trying.
Devs took a solid, proven format (resident evil) and injected a lot of the Lovecraftian horror elements (hoping for more) that you'd expect. They nailed the 1920's vibe, the troubled character, the voice overs, creepy tech (telephones), magic, madness, mystery...and the setting is just great. Cold, wet, dismal...good stuff. I played it till I had to sleep, was glued to it. Feels like the devs are skirting the mythos, I hope they dig into the meaty stuff and start name dropping great old ones and bring in the necronomicon at some point. Also hoping for some freaky monsters with too many limbs, eyes, mouths and such. The soundscape is fantastic. I kept taking off my headphones because I thought I was hearing one of my cats or people talkin in the hall at 3 am. Witches can swing through walls, but so can your character. That's a simple fix that I'm sure the devs will take care of, early access and all. Someone complained that in early game when all you have is a knife or a hatchet it's super risky to fight the enemies, 2 hits and yer dead. I like that. It's a horror game, not Uncharted. There are plenty ways to sneak past, use a different route or distract enemies. Once you get better weapons, then you can engage. But ya still gotta be carefull. If you like resident evil and you like Lovecraftian horror, you'll enjoy it.
