Description

The New World looms on the horizon, on its shore the shining city of progress, and the last beacon of hope in your search for a cure to your family's fatal disease - New Arc. You arrive to this foreign land by steerage of a steamship, cramped with thousands of other immigrants, a stranger in a strange land, full of wonder. But you will soon discover that the city's beauty runs only skin-deep and all you find is rot beneath the golden facade.

Dark smoke from the factories chokes the skies, segregation, inequality, and corruption run rampant. You will have to rise from the very bottom, make tough decisions, and get your hands dirty if you are to succeed - and you must, no matter the cost!

Craft technopunk gear or master the arcane arts, fight, steal or smooth-talk your way to the top and become the hero or villain you want to be. You will not have to face the trials of this world alone, however; find your companions and gather your party, make foes and allies, fall in love, get involved in a massive conspiracy, and change the course of history forever.

Will you rise to the occasion?

Become the Hero or the Villain you want to be

Create your own character as a Human or Elf, choose your gender, background and appearance. Keep in mind that inhabitants of this world might have their own prejudices and will treat you differently depending on your choices.

Gather your Party

You won’t be alone on these shores. Meet & recruit a diverse cast of characters, learn their stories, face their demons together and help them grow, or use them for your own gain and discard them as fits your schemes. Who knows, maybe you will even find your true love!

Master Technology or Magic

Will you master the secrets of Magic to incinerate enemies as a Hellfire occultist, curse them with mystical Voodoo abilities, or assist your allies as a Celestial sage? Or will you rather cast aside the obsolete ways and become a Steampunk mechanic, Dieselpunk engineer or Teslapunk scientist, and turn your character into a walking steam-powered fortress?

Fight for your Right

Command your party in turn-based tactical battles. Fight head-on and brute-force your way through encounters or observe and analyze each situation and come up with cunning strategies to conquer even seemingly overwhelming odds. There’s a plethora of skills, spells, crafting recipes and consumables at your disposal to turn the tide of battle in your favor.

Manifest Your Destiny

Make a name for yourself, influence countless lives for better or worse, and watch the consequences of your choices unfold. You may start out as only a poor immigrant, but soon your exploits will fill the front pages of newspapers and the events you set in motion will change the fate of the New World forever.

Great potential but what is this start ?

The game seems really great and the atmosphere clearly reminds Arcanum (oh I loved so much this game and its depth). I've just start in the city and it seems pretty enjoyable. Graphism are decent and animations are good. No technical issues so far. Many little things can still be improved to polish further the game (interface, click area, graphism improvements, …). Yet, even in early access there is this “I want to discover” and this "I want to come back", so that's enough for me. BUT!!! What on earth are the 2 scenes at the beginning?! First a crash not explained at all (dragon attack and I’m the one responsible but no more information, I'm not even amnesic). After few minutes and some checks (to understand some mechanisms of the game), I arrive at a finish point to take items (my items?). And then, with no link at all except a black screen, I'm in another environment in front of a judge (excuse me who are you?) reading my journal (since when I have a journal btw?) about situations I don’t even know. And I have to choose how to respond (what are the impacts of my blind choices?). Then new screen saying “several months before” and I start in the city. I'm totally lost!!! What is the link, the logic, the story? I really dislike this kind of opening in movies and it’s the same for games. From what I’ve read in others forums, people are disappointed too. I understand now. I hope the developers will change that in the release version. And they come back to something chronologically consistent. Forget the future, more future, then past (then more past and then present?). To take Arcanum as a reference, the introduction was clear: a cutscene explains the crash and then we have to unravel the story behind (and what a story!). And the game always goes forward. For the time being, I will just forget these 2 obscure and confusing scenes and pretend the adventure starts when I arrive in the city. And I cross the fingers it is changed by the devs in the release version.

Promising RPG

Got into New Arc Line because of the promise of being an Arcanum successor. Now those are some really big shoes to fill. New Arc Line really does take inspiration from Arcanum but I don't think it's actually meant to be it' successor. It has it's own thing going on which is kind of different. Personally I find that it doesn't take itself seriously enough. Perhaps a little bit too goofy when it comes to charactes, quests and narative in general. The developers put in the effort and I appreciate that, that's why I think the game's got promise.

Rough around the edges, has potential

It's a decent enough CRPG. Looks decent, has good worldbuilding, and combat has potential. However, it's still clearly in need of further development. Some parts of the dialogue are a little rough, performance is not all there (but it is better than it was last patch), and there is very little in the way of customization and QoL as of now. Overall, it's no Baldur's Gate 3, but love and effort clearly went into it and it's worth picking up in its own right. I'm eager to see where the devs take it next. The setting and the systems in place both have a lot of potential.

Already works pretty well

For an EA it works well, no hard crash in the >10 hours it took me to get through the content currently available. The atmosphere reminds me of a mix of Disco Elysium (the graphics and all the skill checks in diaglogs) and Assassins Creed Syndicate (which plays in 19th century London). There is one annoying performance issue in larger buildings and dungeons. About every minute the game freezes for about 5 to 10 seconds, then continues normal until the next freeze. In the outside world and smaller buildings this doesn't seem to happen. Also I think the developers made a rather questionable design decision regarding the levels of party members. Most games typically take one of two approaches. Either when characters join the party they become the same level as the main character and keep getting the same XP whether they are in the active party or not, so they keep up. (Pathfinder does this for example.) Or the characters join at a fixed level but gain XP individually based on the ratio of their character level to opponent level, so they catch up fast. (Trails games do this.) Unfortunately here the party members always join with level 1, and every character gets the same amount of XP, so they are never able to truely catch up. All in all I still would recommend the game to anyone who likes RPGs and doesn't need bombastic graphics.
