Some of the negative reviews are simply making false claims, so let me counter those:
- There is a manual for download here on GOG.
- Combat can be sped up by pressing Enter.
- It is certainly not just a combat RPG, there are many puzzles, storylines, NPC's etc.
- Yes, the game doesn't hold your hand, just like the Wizardry series. This is an oldschool RPG.
- The game is finished and balanced. It doesn't become “easy“, though you can set your difficulty level.
- The bugs have also been removed over the last couple years.
There is an extensive collection of tips at grimoire.wiki, for those who do not already know this.
Grimoire is for those who enjoy oldschool RPG's. And that it does extremely well.
This is a retro RPG based on (but not related to) the Wizardry series.
The game opens with a rich (and complex) character generator that comes with a wealth of settings, many of which are not necessarily intuitive and have consequences not explained in game. Here you really HAVE to consult the game's manual and other sources to learn the game mechanics or you might get stuck early on.
As an example, all classes gain new levels at a vastly different pace, meaning that even though you can select certain classes during character gneration, this selection will get you stuck, and advance at a punishingly slow pace. You also HAVE to multi-class throughout the game which requires planing during character creation, because not all multi-class paths are valid and there is only one single path that is actually optimal to max out your XP - none of which you will know, unless you read through the game's wiki pages.
In the actual game, your party moves one field at a time. Text messages explain what is going on around you. Enemies are randomly generated encounters, triggered whenever you enter a new field. There is no way to anticipate or avoid an encounter.
Combat is turn-based with a number of different attacks and options, which are (again) not explained in game.
The battles are frequent, randomly generated, and unforgiving.
The game furthermore comes with a vast number of customization settings that activate or deactivate several comfort options (to make your experience even more retro), switch the style of the UI, the background image on your start screen, and even let you pick a number of different start scenarios for your party (all of which are equally punishingly hard).
This is a niche game for hardcore retro gamers who WANT to read blog posts and consult spreadsheets, spend hours optimizing chracters and love to play with settings. If this is you, this is an instant must buy-you will not regret and sink tons of hours in. Otherwise, you might not enjoy this game.
Grimoire is a piece of art, nothing less. When I purchased it the first time on itch.io I wasn't sure how long I would play it (nowadays most games tend to bore me sooner or later and I don't finish them). However Grimoire surprised me from the first minutes with its atmosphere and managed to keep me on the edge for half a year, at least 300 hours! There is no game in my memory (dating back to the early 90ies) that managed to capture my attention for such a long period. In this time I climbed to the highest peaks of Hyperborea and descended to the deepest pits, I discovered sunken cities and the remnants of fallen empires, busy cities and sinister crypts, sailed the seas and found treasures in deep forgotten forests, met both sages and simpletons, defeated many foes and discovered forbidden magic... and much more. Just about every location of this game tells its own story and everything feels like wonder and adventure.
While its basic gameplay principles are very similar to Wizardry 7, it adds much to the formula. It's full of features, interesting encounters, almost poetic story telling (similar to Wiz 7), countless different stories and adventures, many secrets to discover. While the game may be a bit shocking at first to a modern audience it rewards everything in subtle ways not many games do. You'll die a lot until you get the grip on gameplay and there will be much head scratching until you fully understand everything - but for me even this learning process was very rewarding as you'll get better and better by yourself.
What makes Grimoire special is also the unique world design, the many different stories it tells and the quirky characters you encounter. The overall story is very interesting and thought provoking too.
Overall Grimoire is one of the best and most profound RPG-experiences I ever had and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to everybody who likes deep classic RPGs.
Grimoire is a dungeon crawling RPG with grid-based movement and phase-based combat. it's not only a love letter to games like Wizardry 7 and Lands of Lore, but also a great game on its own.
in Grimoire your party of 8 self-created or premade heroes (consisting of vampires, drakes, giants, saurians, fairies etc.) are on an epic quest to restore peace in the fairtytale-like world of Hyperborea.
you'll explore a vast open world made up of lush forests, dangerous dungeons, water areas, mountains and multiple towns and you'll fight tons of challenging enemies.
just like in the good old RPGs, which this game draws inspiration from, you also have to solve intricate puzzles.
a game like Grimoire hasn't been released since the days of Wizardry 7 and it is a must play for every old school RPG enthusiast. this is an unironically awesome game, which I not only paid the full release price for, but I've also bought it a second time on itch, to support the single developer behind this modern 90s masterpiece.
big thumbs up!
If you loved Wizardry 7, this game is for you. It is basically a spiritual sequel to that game by the man who worked on the original Wizardry 8 ("Stones of Arnhem").
The game is vast, complex and a lot of fun. Not quite 600 hours, but it took me about 150-200 hours to finish a completionist run.
The UI may require getting used to and has a bit of learning curve. However, there are many quality of life improvements over Wizardry 7, such as autowalking on the map to quickly travel where you want or the automatic remembering of each character's previous combat action which speeds up combat a lot.
The graphics and sound are of course "dated", though this type of game actually invites you to use your imagination to fill in the blanks, which creates an almost magical type of immersion.
