A garbage town builder in a flooded world!

Survive in a feel-good apocalypse world.

Manage your drifters as they try to survive in a harsh ocean world, where everything is trying to eat you or sink your town to the depths of the sea! You’ll need fresh water, seafood, and scrap to make sure your drifters can make the best of this wet situation.

Recycle everything!

Luckily the flooded environment offers all kinds of relics from the old world to recycle.
Your drifters can transform garbage, driftwood, and flotsam into boats and buildings. These allow them to collect rainwater, hunt for various creatures, and reel up scrap from the ocean floor.

A moving floating town.

Steer your town as you explore a sprawling, dynamic environment with tall ruins, underwater cities, and coral reefs full of sea life and garbage!
Raise your sails to choose which obstacles to avoid and which to dismantle.

Enjoyable relaxing city building game

Build a collection floating buildings to manage your small colony (raft) of survivors. The feel of this game is a relaxed, peaceful float through a colourful world of cartoon graphics. Pleasant background music and (as of the access) a complete lack of any threat or real challenge will suit people with a spare hour or two who just want to bob around on a series of virtual ocean maps, occasionally wondering if they will run out of food. I imagine it's quite suitable for all ages. Currently (Sep 2019, early access) The core of the content will take a seasoned gamer around 30 minutes to complete, with all aspects achievable in a couple of hours (set to speed on max). The research tree has minimal effect on the game and there is no objective point to doing anything much in this game, although nominal objectives are set for each map. The characters will happily go about their task and even on maximum speed I found my self letting the game idle for the majority of my play through. That said I enjoyed the first hour and will be intrigued how this sandbox, with extremely minimal content, will be developed. The early access runs extremely well with no bugs.

Flashy Fun, not Super Serious

Flotsam bears its Flash-based heritage proudly, and carries many of those strengths and weaknesses. For experienced city builders, the entire game loop is obvious, and even for novices, the interface has been tuned to be clear and explicit. Simple graphics and detailed help tips provide suitable guidance. The actual construction is a little lackadaisical and that made me restart several times. While I think the goal is to incentivize a sprawling, makeshift construction, I prefer tighter builds and clear grids. Not knowing how the pathways work, what would snap and how, and how buildings would clip… well, like I mentioned above, restarts. Resource management has similar permutations. All drifters are at least competent at all skills, and complaints do not significantly inhibit performance. Except they do, because the day cycle means that a task executed too late in the day or just a little too slowly, does not complete, and the crew starves, dehydrates, is poisoned, or whatever. The combination of crew and map does make for significant variation, though most players will end up struggling with the RNG to find a combination that optimizes their strategies. In short, have fun, don't try too hard, let the drifters complain a little, chill out, and you'll do well riding the waters, picking up trash.

Great potential, but not realzied

The atmosphere is really great. It looks amazing and feels amazing. However: The content is really limited. Procedurally generated or fixed map you get the same landmarks over and over. When you manage to figure out the food and water problems you've seen pretty much everything from the game. I would say 10 hours play time at most unless you really really realllly like the atmosphere. There is no end game really, there is no progress. The game has really great potential, but it needs tons more work.
