World in Conflict: Complete Edition

first things first, you are getting this for the single player, its a good thing its a good one, this is an RTS that is very easy to pick up and play, no resource gathering, its all about the tactics with an obvious focus on modern mobile warfare the single player is very varied and it has one great story to tell with very memorable characters, it is also a real nostalgia trip for anybody who lived through the late 80s/early 90s

I'm getting tired of big companies releasing broken ports of games. It's not GOG's fault, it's Ubisofts and their lack of proper play testing. While I think the game is fun so far, it suffers from random crashes and a 2GB memory limit error. For a CD based game not running on Windows 11 and/or 10 this would have been totally fine. Since there usually are fixes for those. For anyone interested, here's a fix I found for the 2GB memory issue: https://www.moddb.com/downloads/large-address-aware1 For the random crashing issue I read something about setting the game to DirectX 9. Don't take my word for it though In summary: Buy it at your own risk, and know it could be a hassle to get it to work.

I really enjoyed my time with this RTS. I had no nostalgia for this title when I bought it on GOG. It has a campy story and fun gameplay. The missions are varied enough to make each exciting and fun. It's dirt cheap when it's on sale. Just treat yourself and buy it!

This feels like a high quality Tom Clancy flavored alternate future novel with tight unit controls and, without a doubt, the prettiest explosions I've ever seen in any game to date. Things don't just blow up, they erupt into realistic columns of smoke and fiery ruin, sometimes with visible shockwaves. Chatter is thankfully very varied to the point your units will chatter to each other if you zoom in close enough and they're inside a vehicle or a building. You can't have a great RTS just because it looks good, but unlike even Command and Conquer 4 (which I loved) this feels much more down to earth and dependent on pushing field advantage instead of turtling behind a base. I was worried the chaos would become too much but thankfully the campaign divides up the action into squads moving to objectives, and the AI is pretty good at keeping itself alive (shooting by themselves, taking cover...etc) Nice music, fun characters, zoom in on some lovely graphics and I might have mentioned the very pretty fireworks.

In the install location of your game right click "wic.exe" and select properties. Click the compatibility tab. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows98/ME" Navigate to Documents>World in Conflict and Locate "Game Options.txt" on your PC. Open that and scroll down to the bottom and change "myDX10Flag 0" to "myDX10Flag 1" Right click Game Options.txt and select properties. Check the box to make the file read only. Click Apply. Then click OK. Worked for me! I replaced the DLLs from the copied and pasted zip, changed the Direct X version in game options as noted. However, The Compatibility mode for me (on Windows 11) had to be set to Windows 7; I tried the Windows 98 suggestion, didn't work. Windows 7 did.
