World in Conflict: Complete Edition

I have this game already but I wanted to add a review. It's a pretty simple and straightforward game. The mechanics don't take long to master. The Graphics have held up so well it's surprise. There's a lot of depth to the game if you zoom in and listen to groups of troops. The story is just within that realm of possibility and that one level you get have to deal with the town defense is pretty twisted with the follow up level being very apropos. It's a game I play when I feel nostalgic or want a bit different mechanics to play with but don't want to get kicked in the teeth by C&C 4's stupid setup.

As the title suggests, the story is great: I've played through it twice (first on easy, then on normal), and it never fails to be engaging. Gameplay is also great; The point allocation is, in my opinion, vastly superior to base-building. I'd strongly recommend it. Multiplayer is probably also fun, but I haven't tried it.

Mainly because of the micromanaging aspect (esp. resources and base or unit building). I would classify WiC as an RTT (real-time tactics) game. I first got into this genre via Tom Clancy's EndWar, but even I felt that one was kinda lacking something (too arcadish, but I blame it on the fact that it was made with consoles in mind). I credit WiC for bringing me closer to the RTS genre, due to its accessibility and user-friendliness. However, once you master this game, you're left wanting more. This inadvertently drew me back into playing games like Warcraft 3 (which I am currently addicted to). This game is the perfect stepping stone to finer things and will make you appreciate it more as you look back and see how far you've come with this genre.

Despite all the good reviews i wasn't really able to get into this game. I like strategy games to have pauses , chances for strategy, to know the units, to plan an attack. This is not that kind of game. maybe the later levels change but the first few are non-stop action and goal oriented play. basically go to spot A shoot enemies hold position b no go to spot c and kill more. every few minutes the camera is flying around and commanders are barking orders and it's onto the next objective. no reprieve, no chance to think about your troops or what to do just go-go-go and with very specific directives all the time i rarely felt that I was actually in control, just grunt following orders. Combined with the constant chaos of explosions and allied units and the similarity between the units I'm controlling everything is just a messy blur. For some this seems fresh and interesting and they will enjoy the constant action but it's just not my style of "Strategy" , for me I like something more deep.

This is still my favorite RTS since it came out back in 2007. Holds up extremely well. Single player is solid with high production value. Multiplayer is very fun and still functional because of fan support. Go to massgate.org to get it running. Can still find multiplayer matches in 2021 as well as games against bots.
