Description

While echoes of the original release pacing problems remain, the Director's Cut does much to add variety to the experience with new features such as perks, quirks, and precision aiming. It's likely not enough to warrant a replay if you've already finished it, but if this is your first foray into inXile's bleak vision of the future, this is the best place to start off.

Despite some gameplay flaws, Wasteland 2 gets a lot of things right for the genre. Fans of isometric, hardcore RPGs will find a detailed world to explore in the title. inXile Entertainment provides deep attention to detail on an awe-inspiring level. Creation of independent currencies and social hierarchies in the game create a living environment. Fully fleshed-out NPCs with voice-overs add to the detail of the wastes and make characters more than just placeholders. Interacting with the environment may lead to new clues and options for gameplay. Wasteland 2 is full of player choice and replayability that will keep players busy for a while. With gameplay easily exceeding 80 hours of content, Wasteland 2 is not for the faint of heart. Those who appreciate challenging experiences and detailed world-building will find Wasteland 2: Director's Cut an important installment in their RPG library.

Solid, but not outstanding

This is a great Indy level game if you go in expecting a AAA title you will be disappointed. As is you get a fun game with a good story and some lite RPG elements. CON: The combat is fairly simple and not deep on strategy while the camera can be fairly annoying this is why I knocked it a star. Well worth the purchase.

Very solid RPG, better than any Bethesda

Very solid RPG, better than any Bethesda game. I've spent over 120 hours playing it 2 times and I've enjoyed it very much. There were some weaker moments but in the end, when I saw the ending slides I realized that I got attached to some of the characters and would like to know what happened next. Quests here are nothing special, they're usually fetch quests or kill quests, but they are above Bioware or Bethesda level. What's more there are consequences to your decision which cover many options. Sometimes it's only A or B choice (i.e. a binary one) but very few contemporary RPGs have even that. Usually, even if there is a choice it's A or A (i.e. the choice is virtual). Many players have complained about loot being scattered all over the place. While I agree that it's not too believable and doesn't fit that well in a postapocalyptic setting it's not a deal breaker for me. The truth is most people have OCD and can't stop themselves from trying to open every container they find and waste time. If they would restrain themselves I can guarantee that the game would become much more enjoyable. As for the fights, combat system is primitive but again, much better than in other new (i.e. 2002 and later) RPGs. The cover system is a very nice addition and the fact that high ground makes a huge difference and some of the obstacles that are used for cover can be destroyed makes it even better. With combat speed set at maximum level fights are never that long and aren't tedious. It was satisfying for me to dispose an opponent from over 40 m away with my sniper rifle or blowing them up with RPG-7 or melting them with plasma hammer. The music is also great with many memorable moments (like the Hammer and the Book song). Graphics aren't that bad and comparing them to D:OS is pointless. Exploring the map and trying to survive in the wasteland is also fun. Anyway, Fallout 1 > Fallout 2 > Fallout New Vegas (it's Obsidian game not Bethesda game) > Wasteland 2 >= Underrail >> Fallout Tactics > shit >> Fallout 3 > Fallout 4

Good step in post-apocalyptic games

The Elvis_Nilsson review is very precise. This looks and plays like a test run for something better being developed, and is clearly a game attempting to rework FOTactics. The most important improvement is the camera rotation even if it is sluggish, but as others have mentioned it has many negatives: 1) You can't set up ambushes out of combat, only position your team in somewhat advantageous positions. 2) Weapon damage is unrealistic, an FAMAS does not do significantly less damage than an M16. And weapon range is totally unrealistic: 30-06 rounds can kill at 300 meters as well as it can at 30 meters. Ranged weapons (maybe not energy weapons) should have 5 times their current range limits, but have accuracy diminish over distance. 3) You can drink irradiated water with no bad effects and one radiation suit works for the whole team. 4) Apparently Rangers don't eat. 5) Why no vehicles? There are tons of parts lying around. 6) You're a Ranger, but it gives you no benefit except for pushing the plot. The Ranger Headquarters should provide at least SOME supplies (Like 20 rounds of ammo a day) for no cost. They do provide free medical. 7) The splitting of Lockpick and Safecracking is stupid, but creating a Brute Force skill to break down gates instead of using strength is moronic. 8) NO sneaking. 9) Enemies should drop all their possessions when killed. If this causes game balance problems, the creators should have balanced the game differently. 10) Guns jam too often. The atmosphere is good in the game. The character creation is fairly balanced. I don't mind taking an hour to create a good team with balanced skills, although the idea that safes, locks and computer programming gets harder as you get further away from Ranger Citadel makes no sense. Finding ammo all over the desert, and that enemies have unlimited ammo until they die is stupid. Enemy combat AI is not terrible. Not a bad game, but should have assimilated more good mechanical points from FOT.

Very happy I backed this.

As a backer I have been following this game from the beginning. I have seen the results of inXile listening to our feedback. They really have put significant effort into making the game that WE want while staying true to the original Wasteland's feel and gameplay. The setting, atmosphere, storytelling, and excellent voice acting make this a very engrossing saga that makes me crave more time in my schedule to play. Yes there's a lot to read but it's ALL very well written and worth reading. The combat is quite satisfying. Many are knocking the sparse availability of ammunition but I think that's a huge plus. It really makes you conserve resources and think about the best way to approach any conflict. You shouldn't approach combat as a run in, guns blazing, shootout. The reason I'm giving it 4/5 stars is because: 1. The camera controls are starting to become annoying. At first I thought they wouldn't bother me. But some scenarios with more confined spaces really make it an issue to have a poor angle and sluggish rotation. 2. Using skills becomes tedious when you have to switch to the right character with the skill, add the skill to your hotbar if it isn't there, then click the skill, and then click the target. Way more work than necessary in my opinion. Thank you for reading my review.

The Wasteland 1 polished

The game lets to create 4 characters and to use others 3 from a list of NPC. Each character has attributes and skills, equal to the first game from the 80’s. In this game the attributes have less impact than the skills, and they are gained only by leveling or with specific items and events. The way to use uses the skills is very polished as compared with the first part. Each one of them will give you certain advantage or benefit. For the exploration 2 skills will help you to avoid battles or getting better positions, move faster and find caches in the open world. The dialogue system is very similar to Fallout 1 and you has 4 skills for getting different dialogues options, THOUGH you need to use them immediately or will be lost, and you need at least 2 of skills for getting different approaches to the quest. The other skills are related to open containers, disable traps and alarms, weapons and, the favorite of Biargo: Repair toasters. The game history is well written and funny, but is a little classic, from the firsts minutes of the game, you have a good notion of who or what could be the bad guy. The battle system is based in turns and ruled by the weapons skill but is from the old school, so, probably will be seen as “limited” or with poor implementation of cover and ambush. However, each battle scenario has been made for giving the player a variety of possible tactics, except the generic battles in the overwolrd. In battle, you are not forced to migrate to lasers or heavy weapon as simple pistols will be useful in the final battle, neither the best armor will protect you against everything, actually it make you more vulnerable to laser weapons. The graphics are probably the most weaken point of the game, this is linked to the graphic motor chosen. Still, the atmosphere wished by the developers is reached. By last, my first game was more than 30 hours and the game have different finals and some secrets, guaranteeing certain replayability.
