Solid ARPG (with Slayer Edition)

Warhammer: Chaosbane (Slayer edition) is a well crafted experience with some shortfalls here and there. Gameplay: 3.5/5 The gameplay is enjoyable in my opinion and the classes feel well made however the map design is quite boring which sadly drags everything else down. There's very little variety in terms of level design and once you've played 1-2 dungeons in a given zone you've basically seen it all. They feel almost identical and they're mostly linear and contrived consisting of long narrow paths- there's no sense of openess. Also the enemy types aren't varied or interesting enough in my opinion. There are some bugs here and there like passive skills not providing the listed bonuses things like that, nothing major but still annoying at times. The endgame content is decent in terms of variety and there are quite a few difficulty options. As far as character builds go there's a good selection of skills and passives you can choose depending on how you want to play. Gearing is okay I suppose. I think there's 3 heroic sets for each class which support different playstyles and the other gear is just randomly generated stuff and not that interesting. Don't expect Grim Dawn or Diablo II levels of depth. This is more laid-back and casual. Story: 3/5 The story is okay, nothing groundbreaking. It didn't get me emotionally invested though. Visuals: 4/5 The visuals are quite nice and the game is mostly well optimised from my experience. Audio: 3.5/5 The music is solid but I feel like there are too few tracks overall- it gets a bit stale quickly. There's also barely any ambient noise The dialogue is well voice acted but sometimes quite cringe in terms of how the villians speak.

Similar gameplay/skills to Diablo 3

Chaosbane has 6 classes with skills learned on level similar to Diablo 3, slightly more complex as instead of just getting alternate versions of the skills, you get a number of skill points, and the higher level variants of skills are "improved" but cost more points to equip. They can be swapped freely in and out at any time, though. There's additionally a level-based "God" skill tree which has a relatively simple web of passive bonuses with major nodes that grant additional active skills, altogether making for a decent variety of combinations. Difficulty can also be adjusted, making enemies harder but giving loot/exp bonuses. This is unfortunately not tuned very well as I was able to get a full heroic set on normal (very, very easy) as well as massive amount of exp in the chaos tower, where enemy difficulty and loot quality scale up each floor, but loot quality scales up a lot faster than the difficulty does with the normal difficulty settings. Where Chaosbane falls short is the layout of maps and progression through the main storyline, which instead of allowing you to move forward and return to town as you like, splits each act up into an unnecessarily large number of tiny missions to go from town, to an instance, to kill or collect something, and then back to town. Each instance looks like, or is a randomly generated map of simple hallways, and while the game does have a decent number of biomes, having to go straight back to the same one again and again, into maps that all look the same, makes it less appealing than it otherwise would be. Overall it's still decent.

Fun start, boring end

As my title suggest. When you first start up Chaosbane everything feels fresh and fun. Albeit almost everything are borrowed and done better in other ARPGs. However after a couple of hours you start to notice pattern in the game. For once, there are only 4 maps (with the two expansions there are 6 maps) and that is a very bad decision from the developers. Running through the same map for the 10th time is not fun at all. Then comes the next gripe with the game, it is too easy. I played through normal with the tank and on all bosses except the first one, my hp regen was faster than the damage received. So I was just standing there smashing away on the boss, not caring about anything. The final minus I have with the game are the story, both for the game, and the expansions. they feel like they were written by a 10 year old. Nothing new here. You have done everything at least 10 times before in other games. The final verdict is an ok game for Warhammer or ARPG fans.

Wasted potential

Very mindless hack n' slash ARPG. I could only play an hour and a half before quitting. It just doesn't grab me, which is sad given how absurdly rich the old Warhammer Fantasy lore is. I know story isn't a major focus for most ARPGs, but even in that aspect the game just feels like it's checking off boxes, trying to do the minimum and nothing more than that. It was, however, functional, so I cannot give it 1*. It gets points for working at launch, which I cannot say for some other games I've gotten from GOG. If you can get it dirt cheap, and REALLY want to play something mindless and simplistic, maybe? Otherwise, hard pass. There are so many better ARPGs out there. Hell, there are worse-playing ones that are at least interesting. I cannot say as much for Chaosbane.

A very shallow game

fun for the first 2 hours, then you realize the enemies are copy and pasted in every world, you have no clue whats going on on your screen.
