I've been waiting for this one, I wanted to wait til it was finish so I could potentially binge my way through it XD
It is a really good game. Though a bit difficult, even on lowest difficulity, but I think you can buy perks/upgrades later one to make it more fun.
Either way, its pretty cool
- Old school,
pristine and awesome graphics? yes!
- Over-the-top and extraordinary fitting music? ooooh, yes!
- INCREDIBLE voice actors? OHOOHOHO you bet!
(especially the main character: really, and I mean really surprised me!)
- Starting-hilariously-silly-but-then-twisting-into-something-different but ALWAYS intriguing?
GOD, YES!
(I admit, the story was the main part that get me going to the end. and it's not just the mere plot: the
way it's delivered is better even than most adventure games)
- Frantic Gameplay, reminiscent of Quake but almost evolving into a style of its own?? yes....
...And that's why, although amazing, the game doesn't reach the 'masterpiece' status (only if not by an inch.
Although Viscerafest is undoubtedly a passion project, made with a clear artistic intent, that purpose... welp, it's intended for a very niche kind of gamers.
Now, I should have written before: Although it does look like one, and in certain areas it actually is, I personally don't consider the game to be a 'boomer shooter', at least not by the 'standard definition' (which is silly: there are no 'guidelines' how to make one, but for the purpose of my review, and to make the readers aware of what they are buying, let's use it).
Basically, the game plays like it was made for kids after taking Amphetamine: it's OVERWELMING fast, the player is forced in bunny-hoping the whole time (which is a designed core mechanic, which I believe is interesting) and it needs you to be able to make split-second quick-decisions constantly (I must admit, I no longer am that young but I do have a over-two-decade experience playing this type of games and I needed to lower the difficulty to hard, in order not finish it).
And yet, I was captivated by the story that I simply needed to finish it!
So, yes, An awesome game that I hope shall have a sequel more... relaxed!
P.S. you can auto-bunny-hopping by keeping pressing space bar... you're welcome me later.
A 2.5D retro FPS with beautiful, neo-Quake movement, a not-too large selection of weapons, and fairly satisfying combat.
- The game looks great
- The movement is fantastic - bunnyhop across the map like Ranger and Bitterman only dreamed of
- The weapons are good. They do miss trade some visceral punchiness for sci-fi laser sounds
- The level design can be a little bit on the slaughter-map side. I don't enjoy enemies spawning behind me... but, okay, fine
- An actually engaging story, believe it or not! Well-written good voice-acting
- Brutally difficult. I'm usually an UltraViolence / Hard kind of guy, but I almost turned this down to the lowest difficulty at one point
Overall, well worth the $13 I paid for it, and I'm looking forward to the coming episodes.
Viscerafest wears its Doom inspiration on its sleeve, from the weapon UI to the sprite-based enemies and environmental objects, while pursuing its own balls-hard slant on the combat -- and this is where it stumbles right off a cliff for me. The character, setting, music? They're fine. The manual limited checkpointing system is pretty clever. The level design, taken in a vacuum, is... alright. But the only way to survive in this game is by bunnyhopping around fast enough to avoid enemy projectiles, in extremely boxy and rather closed-in levels that don't really allow you the room to do this properly, while affording you an utter pittance of ammo and thereby expecting you to maintain pinpoint accuracy and punch the smaller enemies whenever possible. While trying to bunnyhop through claustrophobic levels and your targets are single-facing 2D sprites in a 3D environment.
I don't think I should need to explain further why this comes together as a horrible clashing of elements. There is method to the madness, but it doesn't feel like I'm learning anything, adapting, or getting better. I'm just throwing myself into the meat grinder however many consecutive times it takes until just enough of the enemy shots happen to go wide that I don't die.
Go look up some free Doom mods! There are probably plenty you haven't played yet that are a better time than this.
My only real complaint is the Dev's hardcoded the cheat keys to the arrow keys which I use for movement. I am old and not getting "gud" anymore so I activated the dev console and suddenly my movement keys end the level or send me to the hub. All I wanted was some more ammo but thats not going to happen. Refunded...
