It's a decent open-world RPG

Some details regarding my review - I am just over 18 hours into the game - I have NOT finished the game - I have done a handful of quests (I spent 98% of the time roaming around the world) - I am level 29 I'll just say it right away-I have zero emotional investment in the story and couldn't tell you what my purpose in the game is. Two minutes after installing I decided to go exploring and I never looked back. So from now I will be looking at this as a sandbox RPG. Pros: - The world is quite large, you can go walking through forests the entire time and not encounter a single road - Health, mana and teleporter shrines are everywhere in the world - Loot selling is incredible easy-you have portable teleports near the beginning of the game! - You can combine like items so they will increase in stats - Go ahead a murder everyone! A guard doesn't want you to enter an area yet? MURDER HIM. A home inhabitant is preventing you from looting his place? Close the door AND MURDER HIM. It is actually very satisfying :) - Wide-screen support! Cons: - Riding a horse is a VERY stiff experience and you will become very frustrated with it's difficulty navigating the terrain - Organizing your inventory is a very frustrating experience. You have to manually move the items and it is not very good at detecting open slots - It does not feel very alive and you can tell everything has been specifically placed in spots - The dialogue is bland and the voice acting is...amusing - There is not a huge variety of enemy NPC's - Crafting potions is annoying. You can make permanent stat increases but if you change one ingredient then it becomes a basic elemental augment for your weapon-thereby wasting your high-level ingredients. - I couldn't navigate the character creation screen so I could have the option to choose other classes End review: Don't play it for the story. Play it for the cheap price and decent RPG experience.

Early impressions

I downloaded this game with great trepidation but so far have been pleasantly surprised. I've only been playing for about 4 hours (according to the apparently innacurate timestamp on saved games) so I won't go into much detail about the game as a whole. Apart from the seemingly messed up saved game system (which isn't a big deal as you can't 'die' in the game and I've rarely needed to re-load) the game has so far been completely stable and bug-free. The only negative point I really agree with is the cheesey dialogue and voice acting. The game doesn't seem able to decide whether to take itself seriously or not and the voice actors sound as though they have only worked on cartoons before. The pseudo-medieval (or whatever it's meant to be) language is made worse by delivery in American accents; European accents would have helped a little, I think. But overall I personally find it not much more irritating than the out-of-context inflections of Gothic or the recycled voices of Oblivion. And on the subject of those two games, I think Two Worlds has suffered by comparison with them. This isn't a Gothic or Elder Scrolls game. Approach it with an open mind and a willingness to explore and, if you like open-world PC CRPGs, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The freedom and openness of the world is a key factor in my enjoyment so far. I recently played The Witcher and just (finally) struggled to the end of Dragon Age: Origins with no motivation to move on to DA:Awakenings. While those games excelled in writing/dialogue/voice-acting, the console style of the games left me cold. I'd rather exchange those good points for freedom in an open world. If Two Worlds had the writing/dialogue/voice-acting of DA:Origins it would easily get 5 stars from me. Finally I'm going to specifically mention horse-riding as it got so much negative criticism. I like the horse-riding a lot. As one reviewer said, it actually feels like the horse is apart from you rather than a part of you. I can't say it feels realistic as I've never ridden a horse, but I suspect it's far more realistic than in Oblivion. So, if you like like open-world PC RPGs (as oppposed to console-style ones) I strongly suggest trying this game. Forget comparisons with the Gothic and Elder Scrolls games, take this one for what it is and not what it isn't.

Older RPGs do it better...

I wanted to try this (now quite old) game because I so much heard of it when it came out. At that moment I hadn't much time to play so I gave up. Later, I did concentrate the few time I had for videogames on Oblivion, as an Elder Scrolls saga early fan. Two Worlds II then came, and I had other games in priority. So when I found a sale on GOG, I remembered how this game did tease me, and I took the whole bunch without searching for feedback on the net. I was wrong. I'm used to play old games and I think I'm able to relativize the diverse flaws, graphical archaism, old gameplay, and so on. I was very disappointed. If I situate this game in the Oblivion period, then it easily came 10 years to late. I don't care if an old game is not as good looking as a recent one ; but there, it looks far more old than games of its year ! Someone complained about Two Worlds being compared to Oblivion, but how not to do it with such a huge gap in terms of quality, interest, deepness ? The music is quite bad and repetitive, the hero's voice and dialogues are boring and totally dumb, the main plot is simplistic (*SPOILER* you can make the "great choice", the one that seals the end of the story, 2 minutes before the final cinematic... */SPOILER* what a spoiler...), the background is muddled, the difficulty is not homogeneous in the character progression, the RPG-inherent repetitiveness of some tasks seems less bearable than in another game, ETC. I won't talk about the absolutely disastrous mounted horse management. There are many others older RPGs that have not had this so-called stature, and which are far, far more interesting. In short, buy it only on sale, if you are really curious or if you like very basic hack and slash heroic fantasy games.

Real Score = 2.5 stars

Not much to say except that i am a little disappointed in this game. I don't care that the acting is bad (very bad) or that the cut-scenes kind of stuck. Even with those the game is still fun and the story is descent. What I have a problem with are some of the bugs/lagging that i am experiencing. From other reviews it seemed the issue of bugs were fixed and maybe they were but I have experienced a few issues with this game still. Even with the random crashing (yes i tried to fix it and it crashes less but it did not stop) the game is still fun. However I have a really great computer but somehow I am having issues with poor frame rate (lag). I have also tried fixing this and again it works a little better SOME of the time. I would forgive this game its various pitfalls if it were not for the bugs/lag issues that I have had with this game. Overall disappointing game
