Multi-player – Featuring drop-in drop-out co-op play. A free matchmaking peer-to-peer service lets you make new friends and create friend lists. At any time, choose online multi-player, LAN play, or single-player. You can take your same character online/offline and across PC/Mac/Linux play.
Customizable Characters – Players will create and customize a character from one of four classes available and choose an animal companion. Through cosmetic, class, and gender choices, skill path decisions, and the treasures they acquire, each character will be custom-tailored to each player’s tastes.
Individual Loot Drops – Loot ninja’ing is a thing of the past! Every player sees their own loot drops onscreen. Loot drops are not class specific since all classes can equip all in-game items, provided the required stats are met. Items can also be traded between players.
Pets – Look for all new pets in Torchlight 2, the wolf, panther, domestic cat, hawk, chakawary, bulldog, and the papillon. Players will choose a pet to accompany them. Pets can level up along with the player, and will help in battle, learn spells, carry items, and perform a variety of support services. They can also be sent back to town to sell unwanted items, and even return with potions and scrolls!
Randomized Overworld and Dungeons – Explore randomly generated dungeons within the game at any time for extra experience and rare loot. The Overworld areas of vast snowy morasses, desert wastes, and highland plains are also randomly generated. Players will encounter weather, day and night cycles, random quest givers, and random events, creating hours of non-storyline specific adventuring.
It's ok. Not complex enough. Reminds me of Grim Dawn. You can play the game running around spamming one attack button. Seems like something a developer did in his spare time, and didn't put much into it. Like a lot of RPGs the inventory management in a chore. Not enough inventory slots. Lots of selling junk and managing equipment, which is boring and tedious. The world feels cold and dead. I'm still enjoying it enough to play it though.
I didn't much care for the original Torchlight, but the sequel was said to be much improved so I was still looking forward to trying it out. Sadly my opinion remains the same, for mostly the same reasons. It has to be said, though, that there is very little I can point to and say was done poorly. It just doesn't suit my tastes.
Graphics are very much like the original, or World of Warcraft. Cartoony, simple models and bright colors. Not a fan myself. There's no rule that says ARPGs have to be dark and gritty, but I much prefer them that way.
Sound good. Narrator annoying. Caveman speak save space.
The story progression and environments are almost too similar to D2. The hero of the first game has gone bad. You must chase him through the area surrounding the location of the first game, then a desert, then a swampy forest, and finally on to the final confrontation in Hell (a mine here, but close enough, right?). These may not be the top priority in ARPGs, but the devs could have at least put more effort in than this.
Compared to TL1's bog-standard fighter, archer, and mage, TL2's classes are much more unique. That's a good thing, even though I have yet to find a class/skill combination I actually enjoy. The skills that have interested me so far have been grossly underpowered compared to the boring ones, but YMMV.
That leaves the general gameplay, which is what I believe is most important, yet find most lacking here. For the most part, everything is as you'd expect from this type of game, aside from two main things I have to call out. First is that many of the enemies are super tanky. Combat feels boring and unimpactful when everything takes forever to kill. Second is that I usually don't really feel that I'm in full control of my character. Rather it feels like I'm giving commands to someone that usually follows orders, but is under no obligation to, and gets to decide how to accomplish them even when they do.
Torchlight II brings on the PC the closest experience to Diablo II - as far as for now, even as story structure, ambient, and music track. And that's not a bad thing.
Except for the different pick in classes (and the presence of firearms, which I don't like), TL2 feels much like playing Diablo II, probably even better balanced than Diablo II was.
Having moved on Linux, D2 has been a pain to run due to the graphic restrictions and emulations, and TL2 offered me the same experience without the hassle.
So, until D2 will be re-built from scratch to be renewed and Linux compatible, TL will be my new D2 experience.
