A legendary trilogy that truly aged
First of all. Yes, the original Tomb Raider trilogy has a legendary status and did what would set the groundwork for many games to follow. However I must say the controls especially in fights are the biggest challenge of this game. You get kind of into the groove after a view hours yes, but it always felt alien to me compared to games of the time like Zelda or for jumping and climbing parts any rare game/ Nintendo classic. having more than one enemy on the screen is a combination of a horrible camera that goes all over the place and a lock on system that holds on for dear life, while jumps can feel cheap when you have to get every single one just right because Lara is as flexible as Simon Belmond in Castlevania 1 for the NES (Ever jump is a commitment). The old 3D looks that were made in the beginning of the age of 3D isn't everyones cup of coffee either since they can look pretty ugly. Challenges especially in the first game can feel cheap with some leaps of faith and traps within traps you couldn't see. Now to the good part. The atmosphere is one of the best I have ever felt. Music is only used at key moments and other than that a dreadful silence and sometimes old machines can be heared. The graphics and it's limitations are things I personally found really creepy as a kid and mysterious. They just felt alien and ancient to me. The whole game gave me a cold unforgiving vibe like I wasn't the hero but a intruder into a place I shouldn't be in (perfect). Like I said even Laras movement can be ok after a bit of training, even though it never felt great no matter if I tried it on PC or PS1. However that doesn't mean she can't do alot of stuff. Just a bit robotic sadly. The stories are sometimes great and sometimes not as great, but that isn't the point of this trilogy imo. It's the feel of lonelyness in a place that guardes it's true treasure deep within with you as the clever solver of it's secrets. A masterpiece without being a technological gem.
