A few things to note and DLC

I will say I have always believed that this was and still is the best GR title to date....honestly i have no idea what happened with the direction years later with that said I have seen some comments about the two expasions not being availavble on GOG, I have found a solution to this. ( I know I know "I shouldn't need to do this" is what you are thinking) wait until the two expansions go on sale via steam usually they are on sale for like 2 bucks irrc could be 5 I dont remember, and then you can install them via steam and back up the files and uninstall from steam. or if you have a backup from disc or what have you you can use that as well. but overall still the best GR to exist and DRM free is always a plus! did i meantion theres a discord and people still make mods and play online still to this day? i think its a win even with the extra steps for DLCs

An excellent approachable tactical game!

There isn't much I can say that isn't repeating what other reviewers have stated. There are a few things worth mentioning though: Ghost Recon is as approachable and fun as it is challenging. This has alot to do with a devilishly simple interface and control scheme that gives you a lot of options without a tremendous learning curve. Wide open map provide environments both Urban and Rural and allow for a seemingly infinite number of variations. On subsequent play throughs intense fire fights will erupt in new areas every time, and that provides a great deal of re-playability. It's especially well suited towards LAN parties, as it's inexpensive and fighting shoulder to shoulder with real humans adds an extra level of excitement to the game. So yes, it's a tactical action game, and it's best played at a slow methodical pace, but it's also an outstanding action game that's empirically fun to play. The expansion packs were excellent, but the sequels have never done Ghost Recon justice. If you like tactical action, but also want a viscerally pleasing, deeply fun and challenging game this is well worth checking out.

A must own tactical shooter!

Where to begin with the awesomeness that is the OG Ghost Recon? If you are at all curious about the Ghost Recon series and want to experience the best version of them all, you must try this game! This is a collector’s item for any tactical shooter fan. Ghost Recon excels in every capacity and is one of the few near perfect games I have ever played. I highly recommend trying the vanilla version and then downloading the mod Heroes Unleashed to explore why this is such a cult classic. **Heroes Unleashed no longer requires Desert Siege and Island Thunder per the latest release. good but without dessert jungle dlc's

great game but without the dessert and jungle dlc's 4 starts if gog adds the dlc's ill change it to 5 ;)

Less Frustrating than Rainbow Six

I just finished this game on Uplay after finishing Rainbow Six 1998. Let's call it trying out these "classics". After a horrific buggy experience on Rainbow Six, my expectations were rather low and this game has certainly met those expectations. The AI is much improved from Rainbow Six, enemies no longer have purely cheap and unfair advantages and your teammates are no longer completely braindead. AI-controlled squads move tactically and clear corners well. Gunplay is more enjoyable as you clear large spaces of enemies before moving on to the next corner. The game is not without its flaws however. There continue to be frustrating moments in about 40% of the missions involving impossible attacks (especially involving tanks) and a new feature, enemies that spawn (a completely unfair and near unbeatable trick since they appear and attack immediately en masse). With tireless trial and error, they can be overcome but they do take away from the game because it is once again not a tactical challenge but a cheap way for the game to make itself more "difficult" by killing you unfairly. Finally, the gameplay is rather thin. The larger maps are interesting but operators vary mildly only in equipment available. The skill point system is in no way deep but does have a tangible impact after a while. The gameplay is therefore not too deep. The engine is respectable and its core gameplay of long-range tactical shooting and directing fireteams is done quite well, especially considering the era. This is a game I can recommend to someone interested in the history of FPSes, is willing to tinker a little with settings and can tolerate some frustrating moments. All in all, it was not nearly the torturous experience of the Rainbow Six 1998 predecessor.
