The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series contains all 4 Seasons, 400 Days, and The Walking Dead: Michonne, which includes over 50 hours of gameplay across 23 unique episodes. This is the first game where i cried. I love the story so much.
The story-telling, voice acting, art-style and soundtrack all is amazing. Dont expect too much from the gameplay though.
The choices do not matter as much as I would have liked, but when the story-telling is better because of it, then I dont see it as a big problem.
I used to like the series - both TWD and FTWD - but they always managed to trash it somehow. Maybe they should have pulled the writers from this game to work on the show? Anyway, great game. I'm not keen on the cartoonization animation in games but it adheres to the comic book vibe better that way.
The "Definitive" series for this sale price is a crazy good deal. Thank you GOG!!
Although a little un-intuitive. There were some "puzzles" that had much easier solutions than what the player was required to do to solve them.
Some choices are a little restrictive. Not all personality types are catered to. Certainly not my own.
But all in all, a great addition to TWD comic series.
From a technical standpoint this game is a work of art like a comicbook brought to life and infused with seudo 3D aninmation. Simply beautiful. But its full of bugs and will crash randomly even on hardware above the recomendations. When it does this if you are in a timed conversation where you need to make a choice if will pick the worst possible answer out of 3-4 horrible choices...and then autosave when you get dumped back at your desktop.
From a writer's viwepoint....
It's like herding cats with the mentality of angsty 14 year olds. It will have you cussing at the screen and pulling your hair out..
The formula for gameplay is this:
1. Long interlude where you decide you need to find ' item X ' or move to location X.
2. You spend a long time getting item X or going to location X
3. Once you have item x or are at location X one member of your group will decide to debate philosophy AT THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME...Then you will be attacked by walkers.
4. You will be forced to make the worst posible decision for the situation and then you are back to step 1. ( This repeats throughtout the entire game. )
Throw in action scenes where you either have the everlating shotgun/ pistol and then get hit with someone prompting you that everyone is almost out of ammo while forcing you to use an inanimate object to fight walkers because you absolutely HAVE to remane quiet only to have a party member open up like Dirty Harry on something that means nothing leaving you to wonder why the action scene was even necesssary.
Everyone will grumble even after you risked your life for them.
Everyone is a two demensional character save Lee and Clem.
If I ever bother to play this again I'm choosing to be a royal b*astard to everyone but Clem... I bet the end results will still be the same.
TellTale's The Walking Dead is a masterpiece in storytelling. I don't think that I've built up as strong a connection for a character before I had played as Lee Everett. It has provided me with so many hours of content and sent me back over and over to see the outcomes of various situations.
I've played all the other seasons by themselves before, so I knew a lot of what I was getting into but this collection brings back life to a game that is now a decade old (wow, I'm getting old). The enhanced graphics add so much more environmental storytelling and atmosphere than you can imagine. The sound design feels better and I love the music. I think I spent half of my play time listening to the soundtracks on the home menu.
Usually for a game I would wait for a sale and then buy a game but if you're into strongly story-based point and click games then this is definitely worth the full price. However I've seen this game go on sale quite often with good deals. And if the point-and-click genre isn't your kind of thing, you might still just like this game. As someone who can't stand point and click games, I've spent over 40 hours in this game and still had fun doing so.
The only issue I've had that has brought this down to a 4 star rating is that I couldn't access the developer commentaries. These commentaries were advertised to us in the description of the game, however whenever I try to watch them, both with casing of using and not using the galaxy client, I get errors telling me that I cannot access them with my current connection. I've attempted with other wifi networks all to no avail. Each of these networks were quite powerful so I do feel a bit scammed with my lack of commentary but the game is still definitely worth it. If GOG can manage to at least add the dev commentaries as an add-on for the game, then this would be a 5 star purchase for sure.
