A solid collection for a sollid price

I hold some reverence for the first two games in this series. While the second game has some issues and the following three games don't quite stack up, you're still in for a fun time--granted, you know what to expect. I think it's silly to label these games are adventure games. I mean this without wishing to sound derogatory: these are interactive movies with some elements of player choice sprinkled in, through and through. While games like Until Dawn and Life is Strange are better at the illusion of choice, The Walking Dead's first season is still one of the best interactive movies ever made. What makes it work so well is that the writers have a fundamental understanding of what makes and breaks this kind of game. If the writing isn't good, everything around it suffers, and the experience as a whole feels lackluster. The Walking Dead: Season One gladly stands alongside The Last of Us as one of the most human stories ever put into gamer's hands. Season Two falls a little short, but it still manages to pull together great situations out of interesting characters in its prime. I have to state this, though: if you do NOT like interactive movies, art games, or walking simulators, these games will not change your mind. As for what makes this collection so interesting for those who are in this game's camp. All of the games that came out before, I believe, Season 3 got remastered. S1 still looks a little robotic, but the change is massive. Also, there's dev commentary, but it's separate from the game itself. Cool gesture, but I would have loved to hear that stuff as I played. To cap this off: I'm super disappointed that they chose to do a digital-only release for this on PC. As a massive fan of the first two games, I would have happily paid for a collector's edition that comes on discs--or, hell, even a USB stick would have sufficed. I know physical media is slowly dying out, but goddamn it, I adore holding the games I love in my hands.

Flawed Masterpieces

A flawed series, but one worth playing Telltales Walking Dead (Season 1) is one of the most legendary games of all time. It was probably the best reviewed game of 2012. Top tier voice acting, writing and story, presentation that was groundbreaking and unique for it's time, and an episodic release structure that thankfully didn't catch on for any other studios, with Seasons 2 and 4 being just as good (Season 3 isn't great). Unfortunately, these games are essentially just glorified VNs, where you're essentially just watching things play out and the choices you get mean almost nothing aside from a select few. Nothing you do will affect the course of the story, or change the outcomes for most of the characters you meet. Everything will happen the same way, every time, regardless of your choices. That said, it doesn't really matter. Like a good VN, the lack of choice or interaction doesn't really matter when you're too busy being enthralled by the story. And while Season 3 is definitely lacking, Telltales Walking Dead as a whole has some of the best stories and characters in video game history. Worth playing at least once. Just know what you're getting into.

An amazing, thrilling, moving story

This is a masterpiece by Telltale Games. If you played some of their games, you already know if you like the gameplay or not. If you do, the story is worth it, I assure you. For those who never played it, you can think of it as an interactive movie, with a comic book art style. For the most part it consists of dialogues, where you choose the important lines of the main character. Short sentences are displayed, but the actual dialogue is often a lot longer, so you never have the feeling your character is an empty shell. They have a real personality and meaningful interactions with other characters. There is a bit of exploration sometimes, even some "puzzles" in the first season, although they quicky disappear. And the action sequences consist of QTEs, which are pretty immersive. Except if you don't like QTE of course. The story is obviously what this games are all about, and it's GREAT. In short, it's about a convict, Lee, who encounters and then protect Clementine, a little girl he encountered at the beginning of the epidemic who's looking for her parents. Of course, you will get to make a lot of choices, both small and important, that can have consequences of various proportions. You may often hear that the choices are meaningless because the story always ends up the same. This is true to some extent - the devs can hardly build 8 completely different stories at the same time. It's not really a problem, as the real impact of a choice is at the moment you make them. This is how I enjoyed these games, by getting really invested into the characters. These games give you the feeling of being both a writer and a spectator to their stories, of setting them in a path while letting them surprise you. The story itself is amazing, and Clementine became my favorite video game character ever. Seeing her grow up and harden throughout the games is priceless. I cried numerous times. I'm writing this just as Ifinished the last game and my eyes litteraly hurt from crying.

Great movie idea but not so as a game

Originally I played Season 1 & 2 on Steam but stopped before Michonne was even announced. 9 years after Season 2 I found out that this was coming to other platforms than Epic with a DRM-free on GOG I snatched it up when it was on sale Now as of this review, To this day I have not had any story impact me as much as Season 1, 2 & Final season with the Final season being the only story to impact me twice within the same scene. Hence why I said it would be a great movie since gameplay is only there in spirit since it is more like a point & click adventure from 90's era of PC gaming but like I said earlier the story is worth even without a sale

Your expectations dictate the experience

Overly long story short: I can recommend this. Just keep in mind, that if S1 does not win you over, then the rest of the series will probably not do much to change that. Also make sure to get it on sale. This game was quite a mixed bag. It is definitely worth playing, if you can forgive lot of the more lame and downright embarrassing moments, that might hurt the overall immersion. Because of those I was at the point of almost ready to quit the entire game during mid seasons. There's a whole bunch of those moments in seasons 1-3, but a lot less in season 4. Still in between all the downfalls, there are the characters that make you wanna continue playing. Even most of the support characters are very enjoyable. Especially the dynamic between Clementine and AJ, which is my favorite thing in the entire game. Certain side characters have very predictable destinies, you probably know what I mean if you've played the game, and it's just plain stupid after the first time you saw it. To their credit, at several points they will try to change things up, and it can be either refreshing, or too little, too late. I'm somewhere in the middle. The character writing is it's strongest point, and all of them are very well voice acted, and they do make me want to continue and see the end result. Every now and then it also throws nice little twists to the story, that will throw you off just enough to make it not so stale and one-note. Overall I think the story is average, but it's the characters reacting to the world that makes it more interesting. I still think I got my money's worth eventually, when S4 came along. I think that was the point, when it lived almost fully to my expectasions, and I think that's the key word here: Expectations. Those play a big part of your experience, and I think that's what the developers intended, which I do congratulate them for. Okay enough badly written rambling. Buy it on sale and experience it yourself.
