Nice SiFi Hack and Slay. I still miss a sniper gun after a few hours in the game, but it is fun to play.
Dying puts you back to medbay, but you have a bit over two minutes to get your dropped stuff.
Enemies reappearing after you were in the medbay is a con and pro at the same time, depending on your viewpoint, it reminds me of Borderlands where the same thing happens - though it is a bit tedious in Borderlands while The Surge opens shortcuts when playing through a level, making the route to your package shorter and allows skipping areas.
There is no strategy though, so it is good to get down after work.
Got the Augmented edition though. Right when it came out, a day before GOG sent the "The Surge is avail on GOG now!" newsletter ;).
At first one may just dismiss the game as a cheap Dark Souls clone in a sci-fi setting, and to be fair it is understandable, many mechanics are a direct carbon copy of the Fromsoft title, the sluggy combat forcing players to find the right moment to go in (most of the time after waiting the enemy to be locked in his own extremely telegraphed attack animation), enemies and consumables granting "souls" to use to upgrade statistics at the "bonfire", having the possibility to pick back lost "souls" on reaching the place you died, boss fights arenas with "fog gates".
However the developers did not just settle for making a clone but added their own mechanics and twists that make the game unique, the best example is definitely how do you acquire new equipment, you won't be finding them laying around in chests or at traders, instead you'll have to use the localized damage system to cut them off from your enemies body parts. That enemy has a weapon you want? Cut his arm off, you need a specific helmet? Fin and enemy that wears it and cut out his head. The damage system is not just a gimmick to decide which item to grind, specific body parts can be armored so you'll have to target uncovered aread to deal more damage, some robots can have problematic parts that can be individually destroyed to make them a more manageable threat.
The worldbuilding is very good, even if it relies a bit too much on audiologs for exposition there's still plenty of enviromental clues to help you find out what has happened at the CREO facility. The widespread death and distruction next to the motivational corporate videoclips broadcasted around the maps has a very chilling effect.
The levels are plausible, in Souls games often you'll see a location that doesn't make much sense, in The Surge every place feels like had a purpose before the big fuckup.
If you enjoy Souls games, The Surge is an extremely competent take on the genre and very recommended.
The Surge is probably the best "souls-like" out there for me. It takes the well known formula of difficulty, death and exp retrieval but adds many refreshing mechanics. After dying you respawn at a "bonfire", here it's a medbay but you'll have a limited time to get your exp back before loosing it for good. Also, there is no teleportation to the different zones, except if you use the Western themed dlc that allows travel if a specific door has been opened in each level.
The gameplay is interesting and there is a good amount of armor sets and weapons. The mechanic of limb cutting to get armor parts is refreshing and keeps the player focused during combat. However, the ennemy lock sometimes lacks precision when several ennemies are involved. I played with a controller and can't comment on the M+K controls.
The two main expansions add many more weapons and armor sets but are very different. The first one in the theme park is interesting, fun and is a welcome addition to the story. "The Good, the Bad and the Augmented" is very repetitive and boring, it's just a succession of challenges.
I enjoyed the ride and plan to do a new run on NG+.
i have this game and have platinumed it on ps4 i bought it a few months ago on steam beacause i thought it would never come to GOG , so needless to say i am gonna delete it from steam and just have this copy of the game. now i love this game cutting the limbs off the enemies over and over is very satisfying and i love the sond effects when you do , the weapons are fun to use but the heavier ones not so much its a hard slog with heavy armour and weapons , but the light armour and weapons is where this game shines its quite fast paced and tacticle , the 1st few dlcs for the game are great the theme park is fun to play through its just a shame about the final dlc the good the bad and the augmented its boring and repetititive but you do get some cool items if you slog through it . overall if your like me and dont mind a bit of farming for arms and legs etc then buy this game and support the devs and hope the surge 2 is as good as this one .(happy slicing warren)
Most people will refer to this game as a souls-like, which is a genre that never really appealed to me that much. But I like the Surge. The intro really hooked me in, throwing up so many questions about what has gone wrong at this presumably high-tech facility to cause the outfitting of your new exoskeleton to go wrong in such a horrifying way. Why were you apparently thrown away? What has happened to the other staff at Creo?
Then it throws you right into the game with a brief tutorial on the superficial mechanics, and then you're free to explore and make your way around the facility. Or on to the next facility.
The combat in the Surge is relatively simple, you can combine horizontal and vertical attacks into different combos, depending on the weapon and weapon type. You can move out of the way normally, dodge, or block incoming attacks. If you block at the right time, you can counter / parry for extra damage. If you dodge while blocking at the right time, you get a different, stronger counter and you don't lose stamina for blocking. So it starts simple, and you can make it more complicated as you learn the mechanics.
Weapons and armour are not drops on a kill, but you cut off the part that you want. Like his weapon? Target his arm and cut it off. Want his boots? Target an armoured leg and cut it off. Don't want to deal with it right now? Target an unarmoured part for extra damage to kill faster. Opponents also drop scrap, which is used to upgrade core power and equipment. One review mentions that this makes grind necessary, as you'll need to upgrade your weapons to keep up with stronger, more armoured enemies. To a point, this is true, but it's also pretty quick and easy to grind up so much scrap that you'll never have to worry about it again. Just look up a guide for 200 core power before the first boss.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the game, it's hard, but so is early game in Baldur's Gate, for instance. And, the bosses aren't too hard, which I much appreciate
