iTS GOOD BUT I NEED A MAP, I DONT PLAY THAT OFTEN SO WHEN I PLAY I GET A LITTLE BIT LOST, THE MAP IS OK BUT IS LIIKE A MAZE AN CAN GET LOST PRETTY EASY
This was way better than i thought it would be. doesnt explain everything too well, but its still fun. just had to check the settungs to figure things out.
Visuals 5 out of 5
The game’s aesthetics, atmosphere, weapons, and all those visuals are good.
Mechanics 4 out of 5
There are a few settings that you might want to toggle and see if you prefer locking on to the enemy or not. If those settings are on, then your attacks would seem very clunky.
Drops 3 out of 5
The item drops are often of low value. You will need to harvest tons of them to be able to do anything useful. Frustrating, if you ask me.
Upgrading system 2 out of 5
Confusing and poorly-designed inventory system, the crafting and upgrading menus are amongst the most unintuitive and convoluted I have seen.
Orientation/location awareness 0 out of 5
-5 if I could. This alone means that the game is not for me. The target audience is someone who has a great spacial/location awareness/memory. There’s no useful map/mini-map/guidance as to where you are in relationship to the rest of the complex. You either love it or hate it, and I’m in the latter camp. Lots of players actually love that sense of “adventure,” for a particular definition of the term “adventure.” Regardless of the philosophy behind the level design, it’s not for me.
Story 2.5 out of 5
I gave up playing the game 11 hours in, so I cannot tell you if the story makes sense at the end; not appealing enough to pull me in to endure the disorientation torture.
Overall 2.75 out of 5
I had some entertainment that justifies the discounted price. The orientation issue genuinely diminished the enjoyment of the game for a great many players and cannot easily be dismissed.
Would I get the game knowing what I know now?
No, I wouldn’t. The puzzles of the game are the maps and locations: ‘where the **** am I, now?’
Last words
If you like pathfinding challenges, then by all means, dive into the colourful world of The Surge. It’ll provide you with hours of labyrinths, same-looking passages and corridors, inter-connected pathways that wrap around if you pay attention, and so on. Not a pathfinder? Then stay away!
It's really unfortunate I slept on this game many years ago when I first seen it and heard about it, The game is set in a dystopian future for some sort of power surge that Fred the circuitry of a
massive facility and all its Robots and machines, owned by a multi million company called cero that was trying to build a solution to save Earth given that all of its habitats were destroyed, It has a great setting it's very fun
The enemy designs and robot designs are really cool and gameplay is fun. Other reviews have said that, "the gameplay can be Very difficult because the Mechanics that the game builds
on are not continued To the rest of the game".I don't have an idea what they're talking about I never witnessed that, The mechanics that you learn continue just find out the entire game with no
problem So I have no idea what those other people are talking about, But if you're looking to get a really good futuristic Souls like game that's very solid get this one, I went ahead and I already bought the second one before I beat this one so I could continue the trilogy.
As a big fan of the From titles, I really did enjoy The Surge. A captivating setting coupled with a unique mechanic and polished gameplay makes this one a bargain for anyone looking to scratch that soulslike itch. Even better on the steep discount it's usually found on.
The limb targeting/loot system mechanic will be my biggest takeaway from this game. It was truly a breath of fresh air to choose the drop I would get from an enemy to upgrade a piece of armor, or gain a new schematic for crafting. Other reviews have stated that it can get repetitive, but I found myself enjoying the different limb cutting animations while using a new weapon. This mechanic lends itself nicely to a simplified inventory system unlike Souls games. You have crafting schematics (gained from cutting the limb on an enemy wearing a different set of armor), upgrade materials (gained from targeting the specific limb you wish to upgrade), consumables (souls), and implants (passive upgrades/injectables to your armor/rig).
I did have a few minor frustrations:
*There are only a few types of enemies. Thematically, this fits the game so I cannot be overly judgemental here.
*The camera/limb targeting control can be frustrating at times. There is one particular boss where the lock on camera is frustratingly bad. Other times in tight corridors or staircases you'll find yourself unable to see the limb or enemy you're targeting.
*Objectives are unclear and sidequests are very easily missed. Well, this is a Soulslike after all so this one is to be expected. You really do have to explore to find the sidequests. There were a few times I had just killed a boss, and spent a good while retracing my steps and searching every side path to find the progression route forward which did annoy me at times.
It's not a perfect game, but what game is? That being said, if you're looking for a good Soulslike experience and know what you're getting into, I would really recommend you give The Surge a try.
