The Signal From Tölva is an open-world first-person shooter from Big Robot, the British development team behind Sir, You Are Being Hunted.
In the distant future, star-faring robotic factions sift through the ruins of an ancient civilisation. On the highlands of Tölva, beneath the shadow of abandoned war machines, they found something.
Was it the source of the signal you were so interested in? And will the trail lead to enlightenment, or something more sinister? You hijack a drone and you begin the search for yourself.
The Signal From Tölva is a journey into a wild science fiction landscape, filled with danger and beauty: you must survive terrible hazards, navigate through impossible spaces, and fight an ongoing battle to control this haunted, blighted world. You will make use of a range of powerful tools to overcome your enemies and uncover secrets: hack robots to battle alongside you, equip powerful weapons, and detonate savage defence systems.
Fight, explore, and solve the mystery of The Signal From Tölva!
Explore a single-player shooter set in a sprawling, hand-crafted landscape.
Delve into science fiction mystery as you investigate the haunting highlands of Tölva.
Fight a war of territory control against dynamic and ferocious AI.
Recruit allied robots to fight alongside you.
Equip electronic countermeasures, plasma shields, and savage beam weapons for intense skirmishing.
I was attracted by the sci-fi settings and the exploration side of the game, and at first the FPS side was frustrating, I don't play FPS often, but once I got the grasp of the game combat, it became almost too easy.
The whole experience is well balanced, the game is atmospheric, graphics are excellently cartoony, progress is fast enough even if you'll never need all the weapons made available through exploration. Walking is tiresome at the beginning though it becomes faster once your armour improves.
Main game is around ten hours, the Polar Missions adds 3 hours, which is fair enough.
It was worth it.
Best described as a roughly 5-10 hour long, minimalist, slow-burn, open-world shooter.
Unfortunately there are three issues that keep me from recommending it: 1) Storytelling. 2) Too much back-tracking through empty spaces. 3) Not enough content.
Pro: What the game does well is transport the idea that you are remote-controlling/hacking a drone. It really captures the look&feel and capitalizes on in constantly: Low detail graphics? You are a drone, it's your optics. Fast travel? You are a drone, you don't fast travel, you remote-connect to another bot. Spawn points? You are a drone, it's not a spawn point, it's a satellite uplink. And so on. Amazingly well done!
The downside: A serious lack of content.
Storytelling is limited to "there is a signal, find its source", with background info only available as a 48 pages PDF file.
No in-game story, only lore in the shape of semi-related text snippets you collect and may or may not review at a terminal later. This is a shame, as you come across ruins and broken machines that hint at some greater secret that just isn't there, as these objects are mere ambience and there is nothing you can do with them.
You are limited to just 3 weapon types. Rewards give you only minor upgrades on each previous version. Also, there are just 5 types of repetitive missions and they are few and far between.
Unfortunately most of the world - though beautiful to look at - feels empty with few spots of interest and little to no life. This gets annoying, for your drone's walking speed is slow and there is just not enough - if anything - to do along the way.
The game uses auto-saves, no manual saves allowed. Every time you die, you respawn at a previously captured position on the map, which is almost always far away. This means a lot of time has to be wasted holding the walk-button with one hand, while utilizing the other to sip a much needed coffee.
If the latter is a showstopper for you, I recommend to skip this title for the moment.
I don't know why I keep coming back to this game. For some reason, it's like a comfort game for me. About once a year, I come back and play through the entire campaign on easy mode.
But what kind of game is it? It's primarily a shooter with a small open world and sector conquests. There are various points of interest scattered across the map, such as upgrades, story snippets, or bunkers to conquer. Sometimes the enemy factions manage to recapture bunkers, but that's very rare. Along the way, there are always a few sights that keep you busy for a while, such as the remains of great battles with enormous robots.
The game is neither particularly pretty nor varied, nor are the mechanics particularly sophisticated or the enemies particularly clever. But it has a rudimentary backstory with a touch of mystery and lost civilizations that somehow captivates me. And it's not a total failure in any area either.
Certainly not suitable for everyone, it's still my go-to game when I want to relax a bit.
A firsdt person exploration shooter, it doesn't do much different to other similar games, your weapons have infinite ammo, but the reload times are so long thet you'll spend more time reloading than shooting. Also, engaging an enemy will alert ewvery eenmy in the vecinity, whcih wouldn't be sio much of an issue if they didn't have laser focus accuracy, strafing or cicle strafing won't help you at all, your only hope is to find cover and take shots at the enemies, but them they all bombrush you like rabid zerg, if you get in a fight in an open area you'll be dead in seconds. And if that wasn't annoying enough, more than once I was focusinmg on capturing a base or clearing an enemy group just to get ambushed form behind by another group form a different faction (that is also hostile).
Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with the setting, but the combat is just frustrating, not worth sticking around any longer.
It would be cruel to give something this competent less than 3 stars. However this game is thin on content and has no replayability. I will never play this again and I think I am frustrated with it more than I am enjoying it. But it is really really competent and I can tell there is passion and love put into this, for that I'd recommend giving it a go just once. It helps I got it for free many years ago.
