My favorite in the series

Ignore those who keep complaining about the game not working. It works fine with DGVoodoo2, a piece of software that most GOG users should be familiar with. Like other games in the series, settlers 4 is a City builder/Resource juggler/RTS hybrid where you create buildings out of resources and then use those buildings to create more and different resources, with an end goal of (mostly) being able to produce soldiers and destroy your enemy before he destroys you. What sets it apart from the other ones in the series though, is the way it succeeds in balancing these three elements, instead of having one take preference over the other two. This combined with a simply, yet surprisingly interesting story and nice, cartoony graphics makes for a really enjoyable experience if you like me, are into these types of games. Should stress that its far from perfect though. Combat is chaotic with no option of micro-managing at all. meaning the victor is almost always the one with the bigger army. I'm also not that very found of the games music. Which, while certainly nice, only consists of two tracks per race. And when matches can easily go on for several hours, you will quickly grow tired of those two tracks. (There is a way to play your own music too, but i haven't managed to get it to work) In the end though. An enjoyable game that will suck up hours of your time.

It works on Windows 10.

For it to run on Windows 10 without DXGL. You just have to install it and run it through GoG Galaxy. The launcher will fix all the settings and files for you. I've always held this game close to my heart when i was little. I've spent countless of hours on this game and i am still not bored of it. The atmosphere and building/planning in this game is extraordinary. That combined with charming old graphics its really a gem. Any poor potato of a PC can run this game without problem. 10/10, Would love a remaster.

Doesn't work on windows 10

I tried to run it with DXGL as some forum threads/reviews said but I still had tons of issues and the game is unplayable. The widescreen fix didn't do anything for me. The game technically runs to the main menu but at low resolution and trying to start a mission just makes the game crash anyway. I had fond memories of the game that I wanted to revisit but as it is being sold right now, the game just doesn't work and I have no idea how much effort I'd need to put in to get it to work, if it's even possible.

A great game

The Settlers IV is a great game in which I have spent a lot of hours. I remember trying to reinstall my CD version many times with hopes that it would eventually work on my modern computer. Naturally it didn't, but I was very satisfied when I came across the game here at GOG. Sadly, the game, as it is here at GOG, is again starting to get old as the game will not work on windows OS 8 and 10. Hopefully this will be updated in the future, but don't get your hopes up. I'll give this game 5 stars, because the game is a 5 star game. _The maintainance of the game's re-release, however, does not deserve 5 stars._

Broken mechanics, truth be told

The GOG version was patched for compatibility with Windows 10. I managed to run it, yet the game lagged so hard it was unplayable. I had to use DXGL, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to play. As far as the game itself goes—unless you’re already familiar with the title you may have a hard time with it. The biggest problem I have are the combat mechanics (which lie at the core of the game). Once a specific period of time passes the AI begins to send troops to attack you. The enemy will attempt to storm your fortifications. This can be easily countered by building a lot of big towers close to each other, each fully manned by third level soldiers. There are several issues with this. First of all the enemy archers cannot shoot the archers on the towers. They just stand and get shot, since only swordsmen can storm the tower. Secondly, the AI doesn’t use siege engines which hardly makes sense and isn’t challenging. Attacking is even worse than defending. Once you capture an enemy tower (or recapture your own) the AI sends all of its troops after you, literally swarms your land with soldiers, which is ridiculous. You practically cannot command your army, only point them in desired direction. Once they see the enemies they become fixated on them, and cannot be called off. This most often results in the army being decimated since they don’t follow your orders. Among other things to mention is the fact that the game doesn’t tell about the possibility to speed up gameplay with numpad keys in the tutorial or anywhere else (only about the 1-minute time jump, which is useless anyway since it makes you vulnerable to enemy attack).
