The Real Texas: Cellpop Goes Out At Night
Description
Sam, an ordinary Texas rancher, is on holiday in England when he falls into a blue portal and lands in Strange, Texas.
He soon discovers that this town has more than enough problems of it's own. The residents of Strange all seem to be pulled in and trapped from other times and places, just like Sam-- yet things here are oddly familiar.
The Real Texas is a unique blend of action-RPG with strategic real-time combat and many-layered puzzles. Quests and story situations all play into the central mysteries of Strange, a town with a vast, interconnected dungeon underneath. The keyword system is a definite and enjoyable throwback to many great PC RPGs, and means some NPCs have clues to give only if you type them in (most dialogue options are clickable, though.) Uncover the mysteries of "real world" Castle Rockingham, where Sam's vacation was originally supposed to take place, but is now an abandoned castle filled only with ghosts. Uncover secret items and equipment, read books, unlock treasure chests, solve riddles, gather clues, and avoid the estate tax (if you can.)
Add to all of this a challenging quickdraw gun-combat system with six types of classic cowboy and fantasy weapons, a full clothing and equipment system (underwear optional) with various effects, and The Real Texas has a lot to offer any fan of old-school Zelda-like RPGs or action-adventure games.
Explore Strange, Texas: a Kafka-esque parody stuck halfway between modern-day America and olden-days, RPG England.
Zelda-style puzzles and action elements mixed with an Ultima-style RPG conversation trees and inventory system.
Lots of subquests, secrets to find, dungeons to delve, and townspeople to help.

I kind of like the graphics. Yes there blocky but they look ok. My issue is with the gameplay. I have no idea what to do or how to do it. The game is vague to the extreme. Example I have TnT so I should be able to blow stuff up. Nope need something else. What is that? Who knows because the game doesnt let you know what you need. Its frustrating. The health bar well there is none. Driftmoon does what this game tries to do.
I played this game several time and never managed to complete it. Reason - way too unexpected puzzles and cryptic quests.
The plot, itself is very good, albeit featuring rather questionable visual style of heroes there is very carefully carved level design, attention to a small detail, a lot of possible interaction with things and so on. Its very hard to say "this is cheap one day game" or call it poorly made. I like it very much, especially castle itself (i think they spend tons of time making it - it looks like REAL one, i like music, but as i said - its way too easy to just loss any understanding of thats going on.
There is a lot of strange quests, unclear esoteric hints and places to go, I understand that developers not meant to make game too obvious, they wanted peoples to think, but they gone way too far.
Add almost non-existant game guide, lack of help on internet (there is only rather dead developers forum, but its 3 year old game). These weak sides make this game almost impossible to newbie.
Still, i cannot give it less then five stars, because lack of active community is not game fault.
Quirky is one word I'd use to describe The Real Texas, but after many hours of play, filled with laughs, wonderment, and a sense of place that I don't feel with a lot of new games, the only word I can use to describe it now is "must-play". Especially for adventure game fans.
The game starts pretty interesting and is pretty fun to bop around exploring.
Eventually the game just drags out and it's flaws become more apparent. Boss fights are more frustrating than fun due to poor controls. Inventory management is pretty terrible. The end is confusing and unsatisfying.
Overall pretty unsatisfying.
i will never forget this surreal nostalgic ride. i haven't had such a rewarding experience in a long time.
first thing, the setting and the low-fi atmosphere; this exactly fit the game story and the world. when you arrive to the strange texas you feel like you're at home. you know, the kind of feeling you get when you remember your childhood days riding bikes on warm, sunny august evenings. i know a lot of people will not appreciate the low 8-bit voxel-like graphics but it worked magically for me in the setting.
the gameplay and story were perfect as well. the game isn't your new-gen "get from point a to b and here are some hints on how to walk, with checkpoint every 3 minutes", no. the game doesn't fork around. you are left with clues which you have to work out by yourself and as the story progresses, the world opens more and more, gradually raising the gameplay difficulty. this is the spirit of the old school adventures with a lot of exploration with some arcade mechanics (weapons and enemies). of course, the mentioned arcade mechanics are not perfect rpg-mechanics as in diablo 2 or something. these shooting-avoiding things mechanics are simple arcade clickfest based on reflexes, but surprisingly fun and do not feel broken or cheap.
all in all, you develop emotional connection to the characters and the world itself, while having great time thinking about the clues, exploring the land and brush on your old school point-and-click adventure skills and some arcade skills as well.
without exaggeration, this is most likely the best indie game i've played in years. definitely recommended.
