The Real Texas: Cellpop Goes Out At Night
Description
Sam, an ordinary Texas rancher, is on holiday in England when he falls into a blue portal and lands in Strange, Texas.

He soon discovers that this town has more than enough problems of it's own. The residents of Strange all seem to be pulled in and trapped from other times and places, just like Sam-- yet things here are oddly familiar.

The Real Texas is a unique blend of action-RPG with strategic real-time combat and many-layered puzzles. Quests and story situations all play into the central mysteries of Strange, a town with a vast, interconnected dungeon underneath. The keyword system is a definite and enjoyable throwback to many great PC RPGs, and means some NPCs have clues to give only if you type them in (most dialogue options are clickable, though.) Uncover the mysteries of "real world" Castle Rockingham, where Sam's vacation was originally supposed to take place, but is now an abandoned castle filled only with ghosts. Uncover secret items and equipment, read books, unlock treasure chests, solve riddles, gather clues, and avoid the estate tax (if you can.)

Add to all of this a challenging quickdraw gun-combat system with six types of classic cowboy and fantasy weapons, a full clothing and equipment system (underwear optional) with various effects, and The Real Texas has a lot to offer any fan of old-school Zelda-like RPGs or action-adventure games.

  • Explore Strange, Texas: a Kafka-esque parody stuck halfway between modern-day America and olden-days, RPG England.
  • Zelda-style puzzles and action elements mixed with an Ultima-style RPG conversation trees and inventory system.
  • Lots of subquests, secrets to find, dungeons to delve, and townspeople to help.

Underrated gem

The Real Texas is a very "strange" game that take place in the town of "Strange". It took me 3 times to get into. I don't know why, maybe the strange graphics, the "text-interface", or the fact there is not a clear guide of what to do at the beginning. But, at third try, I realized that all of this "flaws", things, were in fact strongs. - The graphics are a bit strange, some seems "paint"-drawn. But, it keeps everything clear and not overloaded. - The text interface may lose the player, but when you dare to use it, and try some words or verbs, you may be stuned by the very deep and various answers you can get. If you push it, you may discover some very interesting and mature (!!) side quest with bring a lot of depth in the game's characters. - At last, it's an RPG, and you are free. In fact this game is not so diferent from a classical zelda-rpg-like. But with both mature and psychadelic contents. The music is also very interesting. Sometime very strange, but everytime well worked. There is very few reviews, youtube's "let's play", etc and so this game seems to stay in the shadow of the modern indie games movement. This game deserves more attention and consideration, you like it or not.

Poor combat ruins an otherwise ok game.

Moving while shooting unequips your gun. The shoot button also moves you so you spend quite a lot of time running in circles when you're trying to shoot while being killed by stun-locking enemies who latch on to you then jump off at your feet making them difficult to aim at. It was just infuriating. I couldn't take more than a few hours. A quest log would have helped. I get that the game is about exploration but it would be nice to have had it. If you can stomach poor combat then it may be worth it but I certainly couldn't.

overlooked gem

I bought this game from the developer on launch day. I totally loved it and finished it, so having spent around 20 hours on it, I hope I'm able to give a good review. It seems to be an overlooked gem which is what prompted me to write this review. I've seen some reviewers criticise the graphics and that's a fair point, however, I found the look to be a bit psychedelic and didn't mind it at all. There is a sense of humour wound through the whole game and the game itself reminds me of Ultima 7. It doesn't look like it but it feels a bit like it. Its an RPG of sorts with some great puzzles thrown in. I've never seen an RPG with these sorts of puzzles before. There was one section involving traversing a maze of forcefields that had me stuck for awhile and I enjoyed it. Don't judge it on graphics alone, that's a bit shallow. It's a great game.

Unique Adventure Games

The Real Texas is a fun, story-heavy game. Players will encounter charming, retro graphics, a delightful soundtrack, challenging puzzles, and perhaps a bear or two. A few common complaints are cropping up in the reviews so far. First, some reviews knock TRT for its lack of clear quests. While it is true that sometimes the player may not know what to do, inquiring with NPCs will always provide a possible next objective. Other reviews complain about the game's graphics. While the graphics are not state-of-the-art, this game was designed mostly by a single person, who certainly didn't create triple A-quality graphics, but who did put together some very cute graphics that serve their purpose well. Anyone who is familiar with the limitations of indie game projects and who does not mind boxy visuals will find no reason to complain about the graphics, which do fit well with the humorous atmosphere of TRT. Including the graphics, there is much to love about TRT. The soundtrack is peppy and matches in-game situations well. The visuals and music work together to create a mood along the lines of Super Nintendo, but the game's storyline renders it a little weirder and more metaphysical than an SNES game. Though NPCs are afflicted with several problems, from death to relationship problems, the game is not bleak. Though it explores themes common to Spaghetti Westerns, it has a cheerier outlook on life, and a good sense of humor. Luckily for the NPCs, the player is a good-hearted cowboy who can help with all of their problems. The one big downside to TRT is its controls. The controls are a bit difficult and some computer setups may make mastering certain tactics difficult. The controls can also hamper the player during boss fights. That being said, these fights are not the focus of the game, so awkward combat need not bog the player down much. (Also, fighting is too cumbersome, the player can always turn on the invincibility option.)

Unforgettable Indie Adventure

This thing is like some bizarre voxel dream, with its square, swaggerin' cowboys and its castles and insane German wizard-scientists and talking rats . . . It's fun and beautiful and a little bit rough on purpose, and I suppose I'll never forget it. It's got one of those kinds of stories that your mind doesn't really grasp fully in the end, but your heart does. Let's cheer this Kitty Lambda guy on and get him to make a sequel.
