The Forgotten City will not be forgotten

An excellent time travelling puzzle / mystery experience with a dash of adventure. Has well-written dialogue and an amazing cast of VAs to breathe life into the characters. I love detective styled games like this and to have it set in an ancient Roman city was such a refreshing environment to be in! The Forgotten City is filled with tons of beautiful artistry and cultural mythos strewn about. Between the context of dialogue and exploring the city, the game rewarded my curiosity with new theories as to what was happening or could be happening. The one major downside I had experienced was framerate dropping. Although infrequent and not too drastic of a drop, it mostly happened when I was in certain areas and more noticably when I was in conversation with characters. That said, I really enjoyed the time I had with this game and look forward to seeing the next endeavor from Modern Storyteller!

Labor of love

What you have here, is a passion project by three indie developers. The game shines through its premise and story telling. The lore was very thought out. Every NPC has a story, and every nook and cranny of the compact city has a purpose. There's plenty of lore (historical and fictional), which I enjoyed. It's rough around the edges. The NPCs look a bit dated. The water was fake. Sometimes there would be "invisible roadblocks" and hangups, that require some work to get around. The controls can be finicky. It's a little optimized, having stuttering in some areas, as long as hefty load times when going from one section to another. It's what's to be expected from an indie studio. But it was an absolute, phenomenal experience.

Sous le charme !

En terme de graphismes, le jeu est impeccable : les paysages et les textures sont très beaux ! Les effets de lumière rendent tout aussi bien. Petit bémol : les visages sont peut-être pas assez expressif même si par moment. Et point très appréciable : vous baissez le regard, vous voyez vos pieds ! Au début de votre partie, vous aurez la possibilité de choisir votre "origine" et une création de personnage assez rudimentaire. Vous pouvez choisir le sexe et la couleur de la peau des bras vu que c'est tout ce que vous verrez de votre héros. Ça a le mérite d'être là. Votre "origine" vous donnera accès à des dialogues exclusifs par moment donnant une re-jouabilité car vous voudrez voir les différences entre chaque personnage. L'histoire est fascinante ! Tout est extrêmement bien écrit ! Les personnages que vous rencontrerez ont tous du charme et une personnalité propre à eux ! Et chacun est très différent. "La Règle d'or" est tout simplement une idée brillante ! Tout au long de votre aventure, vous vous interrogerez sur le bien et le mal et certains dialogues pourront même vous faire douter. Je pense notamment aux échanges qu'on a avec le philosophe. Et le système de boucle temporelle est une idée originale et s'intègre parfaitement dans cette univers captivant ! Au cours de votre exploration, vous trouverez des objets expliquant la vie du temps des romains en plus des discussions que vous aurez avec les passants. On joue et on apprends l'histoire. Les voix anglaises sont tout à fait correctes. La musique est excellente ! Elle apporte tellement à l'ambiance irréelle qui se dégage de cette ville perdue ! Et la possibilité de sauvegarder manuellement dans différents slots rends tout encore plus agréable ! The Forgotten City est un jeu de grande qualité. Pour tout vous dire, j'ai été impressionné par la qualité d'écrire et du scénario. Peu de titres comme celui-ci peuvent vous happer et vous faire ressentir des émotions avec autant de subtilité ! Je recommande !

Not my typical type of game either...

As some reivewers have stated, "This is not a type of game I typically play". I happened upon this game by chance and never played the Skyrim mod it is build after. The game surprises, it is very well done and spite completing it with in 4h:33m, I feel like I want to go back and explorer the things I did not get to explorer and discover one of the other endings. The story drags you in from the get go and keeps you pondering for every corner you turn. Gathering knowledge and using it to change the outcomes of each time you loop in time, keeps you playing and exploring. The game world is not too large, but large enough to hold the mystery you are about to uncover. Combat is a small part of the game, nothing fancy, but feel just right and enough for what it is there for. The story itself, which is the main attraction here, is well done and polished. So if you are just slightly into mysteries and exploring, you should give this game a try. For me to give a game 5 stars everylittle thing has to be just spot on, which nothing ever is, or almost never. I have so few grifes with this game that I wish you could give ½ stars, 4½ for this one.

Excellent Mystery Adventure

The Forgotten City is a first-person mystery adventure with light action and platforming. The story is focused on a modern person who gets trapped in a time loop in an ancient Roman City under a curse. “The many shall suffer for the sins of the one” translates to all denizens dying should any of them commits a “sin”. While there are several ways to accomplish objectives, including persuasion, trade, lie, bribery, and violence, not all NPCs drop the quest items they can give upon death. The characters are interesting and believable, with their own motivations and the daily routine they follow. The protagonist is customisable, including gender, skin colour, and background/class, with the latter providing gameplay advantages, and the dialogue options and actions offer roleplay, while the game itself acknowledges the actions taken and the information gathered. The knowledge and items the protagonist has carry over between time loops. There are several vastly different endings with various conditions to achieve. The combat is mostly optional and reasonably comfortable - the melee option is limited to kicking only and cannot be performed on non-hostile NPC, the ranged weapons offer 3 types of weapons, which allow to attack non-hostile NPC first. One of ranged weapons is used for puzzles and platforming as well as combat. The platforming is light and mostly avoidable, though resetting the time loop requires running. The controls are comfortable and rebindable. The visual style and graphics are impressive on any settings, and the game runs reasonably well on a wide range of hardware. The voice acting is excellent, with all lines fully voiced in English. The soundtrack is present, fitting, and non-intrusive (except for the action sequences). Overall, it is an excellent game and highly recommended.
