The graphics constitute the main appeal of the game. They are absolutely stunning.
The game itself becomes a little redundant after a while. The storyline is intriguing, but a little too thin to be fully engaging.
I have to however give this game props for having roped me back into gaming after a literal decade of never finding the energy or motivation.
Be ware of the spoilers in my review. I haven't finished the game yet, but since I decided to turn on the commentaries I guess I am taking the point of the game right.
This game is exactly for people like me. If you're emotional (like it sometimes literally makes your life difficult, like in my case) you will find this game as a beautiful gem. You're a fox WHO is going through adventure of the time of your whole life as a person. The story is based on the memories connected to the father of the author of the game which has recently passed away.
As for the gameplay - like people before me stated, there is none. I think I should refer to the review of @Insty. The point of the game for me is the story. The game itself is beautiful, the music is simple, but greatly touching. You are supposed to be 'in to the story', feel these emotions. To rather appreciate the close people around you and every little thing they have done for you (like these little toys which were made by a carpenter dad especially for you). The story shall be floating through you while experiencing this adventure. The story is the 'gameplay' here. You're digging the things from the past I guess everyone could refer to somehow, no matter where are you from.
Maybe I am going too far with this but what I can tell right now - this game made me think that I wish I could be a mother for my child to be remembered that way. This game made me think that all these things you remember from your childhood and later years, they make you feel grateful for everything your parents have done for you, all the sacrifices they made.
It's definitely not for everyone. If you're the emotional one - as I am - you will have a great time with maybe many things to think about through and probably after this game.
Finished in one sitting (like 2hrs) but I just love the detail and the story. Very underrated game and an underrated developer. Would buy for a friend if I had the money!
Visually appealing graphics and a furry protagonist were the main reasons I started the game. And, oh boy, I didn't see so much more coming in the process.
While the gameplay itself is basic, I believe it's well-balanced so that we could focus on the story and beautiful music. This combination is what challenges you to think about universal human values and the way your life experience—whatever much it is—reflects it. The calming soundtrack soothes you into a well-minded state, allowing you to mend your thoughts and emotions.
Collecting hidden stars is worth your time, as it comes with visuals related to the story.
The First Tree doesn’t have a ton of game play to it but it makes up for it with a fantastic story and voice acting. The game play it does have is good for what it is as well but on it’s own would be a bit disappointing to some. You play as a fox looking for her cubs. You engage in some light platforming and very light problem solving to navigate the levels. While this goes on you listen to the main character tell childhood stories to his wife. As the fox you can also optionally find mementos from the man’s childhood and collect stars which do serve a slight purpose later on but are still optional. The game works by combing these as on it’s own the great story that gets revealed as you are the fox would just be an audio book on it’s own and without the great story the platforming would just be a very simple game. Together they work better than alone. I do wish that more was revealed about the middle portion of the main character’s life. We learn a lot about their childhood and some of their adult life but not much for the gap in between. The graphics take two forms. While you’re the fox it is almost a cell shaded type world that while not overly detailed has a good style to it and is full of colour. As the man it is a more realistic style. That world is a little less impressive because it relies more on technical detail. It wasn’t an eye sore but at the same time won’t wow you. The music was also superb. I will also say that the few hints the game gives were well done. They didn’t spell things out so much as provide a drawing of what you needed to do which I thought was a nice touch. I am also happy to say that the keyboard and mouse worked just fine which isn’t always the case with some games with platforming sections.
