In Andergast, whose inhabitants are considered to be notoriously superstitious, King Efferdan awaits a state visit from high-ranking dignitaries. For centuries the kingdom has been at odds with neighboring Nostria, but now first steps are being undertaken toward a lasting peace. But a plague of crows troubles the king, for the birds are acting with unusual aggressiveness, even attacking humans. Moreover, there are those among the citizens of Andergast who swear that the crows are bringing them dark nightmares. As the belligerent creatures infiltrate even the castle itself, the king seeks a skilled bird catcher - an opportunity for young Geron to prove that the reputation for ill luck that has followed him since childhood is undeserved. Following an audience with the king, the prestigious task is assigned to him. However, not only does his task prove unexpectedly difficult, but it also turns out to be the first step of the greatest adventure of his life, which will lead him to the borders of the charted lands of Aventuria and beyond.
With a history of more than 25 years, The Dark Eye is one of Europe's best-known role-playing brands. In addition to the popular pen & paper adventures, TDE has also inspired a series of successful computer games. The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav takes you deep into the world of Aventuria, where you’ll take on the role of young Geron and get caught up in a mysterious plot that threatens to wipe out the kingdom of Andergast, a back-water realm in the northwest of Aventuria.
Experience the world of The Dark Eye as a classic point-and-click adventure!
A breathtaking art style that shows every nuance of Aventuria.
Solve a variety of side quests each with different paths towards a solution.
It seems I am pretty bad at this game if I count the number of time I had to check a solution, but that didn't prevented me from having fun with the game; maybe an in-game hint system could have been useful.
I enjoyed the world, even if I didn't know anything about the Dark Eye before playing.
Characters weren't that developed, but they fit the style of game and story.
Bought this game on whim when it was on a discount. I love classic adventure point and click games and I wasn't disappointed by this one.
It is definitely good but it's also a bit cliche at some moments. However, it's a good adventure game in the spirit of the old 80's and 90's adventure point & click games. It reminds me a bit of the old King's Quest games.
The puzzles are logical and increase in difficulty and complexity as you progress throughout the game (they may seem a bit to easy in the beginning but this grows). The pacing in puzzle difficulty is well done.
The scenes are drawn beautifully and the story is interesting. All the speech is voiced (pretty good, not great). All in all it's solid and fun adventure point & click adventure.
Visuals and voice acting are quite good. The story is good, but the characters are not very interesting, maybe they would work better for teenagers but I don't know.
As usual with these kind of games, the puzzles have to be logical, otherwise it's frustrating to try every combination. It's mostly there, but I particularly hated that you sometimes have to go back to a place without a good reason, and something is changed (for instance at the bathhouse). Fortunately there aren't many such instances.
Since most point'n'click adventures try to imitate the wacky graphics and humor of classical LucasArts adventures, it's nice to see a different approach for a change. I wasn't totally happy with the graphics though. While the backgrounds are somewhat beautiful in a concept art way, some of the faces of supporting characters look distorted and ugly. There is also a certain inconsistency in the way e.g. Nuri looks in different scenes, conversations and as animated character. Talking of animations, while Geron has fluid walking animations, that's about it. In a nutshell, there aren't any major animations in this game. Besides, even the scrolling judders and Geron moves around like he's on drugs.
Which brings us to the next problem: Gerold is a dull character and Nuri behaves like a 12 year old hippie girl most of the time - which is emphasized by the voice acting of both main characters. So their desperate love seems somewhat weird to say the least and it's kinda hard to identify with either Geron or Nuri.
Then again, the story is interesting enough to keep you going and the puzzle design is very solid. Like most of the puzzles are logical and some are even quite clever. Unfortunately, the user interface isn't all that great and I got stuck a few times since I overlooked items that blended to well into the background (and there is no way to highlight them).
All in all, it's a very solid adventure game and even if its successor "Memoria" is better, I kinda enjoyed it.
I played Memoria first, not realising it was in fact the sequel. It didn't matter, both games stood alone well. The graphics are beautiful, the landscapes and what not are stunning.
There are a few glitches with the art and the animation at times. The puzzles are quite simple, having not used the hint system on either game.
The story comes together well, this game is not as good as Memoria or as challenging. But I'm glad I played it.
