Linear but full of surprises.

Game is based on battle and dialog decisions, It's not open world, although on the map we can see plenty on information of history and mithology of the world, our impact on where can we move is limitted. But story and graphics make you forgive that just to enjoy the deep dive into this mix of fantasy norse and celtic realm. I have to admit that for the sake of saves it was a little bit annoying to see animations each time, but this has built pretty much intense feeling of stagnacy(inside the story). So each of my decisions were hard to take and be warned as you may encounter the 5 steps of grieve. I felt a little bit dissapointed on the ending because completition of game is not an ending of the story, but just some chapters. Yet still I'd love to know how it concludes and hope at least some of choices may be imported into next parts of the saga.

Beautiful Nordic Story

The Banner Saga is a great Nordic style story about a group of humans and Varl (giant men) on a journey across the land, fleeing from the oncoming hordes of Dredge. The characters are fascinating and well developed. You really feel for them when they die (which can happen based on your choices). The gameplay is really interesting and dynamic. There is an interesting dilemma on how to spend renown, whether on items, supplies for your caravan or upgrading heroes. Beautiful music and artwork. Banner Saga 1 is probably the best game in the series in terms of how it feels to play, the later games tend to get increasingly easier as the characters become increasingly powerful. The other games are all great too, so I would recommend get the series if you like this one!

The death comes unexpected!

With a subtle combination of special abilities I may force all enemies to their knees and survive the tactical battles without big losses. In the following text windows I click on the answer that I think in this situation may be the only correct one... and may quite easy lose some of my carefully and costly leveled favorite heroes. Without warning. Just like that. How do they dare to do this to me!!!11! But as much as I was shocked, I surely will remember this situation for months. Because it happened all of a sudden. And because I could have prevented it. Or at least, that's what I think might be the case. I can't really tell, because the game will leave me uninformed until the very end. The Banner Saga will not appeal to everyone: It is painfully unfair, has a unique but also very unusual graphic style and does not tell his fantasy story about refugees in any spectacular cutscenes, but in soundless text windows. But it is also an unforgettable experience - if you really engage the challenge.

Just not good enough.

The game starts out with nice 2d graphics and introduces you to an interesting world. But the problem starts shortly after. For example, you're introduced to a handful of characters at the beginning which are all forgettable starting with their names. Then the travel scenes start and although the landscapes are beautifully crafted, just looking at them waiting for a random encounter to happen or until you get to the next settlement grows old very fast. The parallel story arcs feel rushed and poorly thought through, so when it's time for both stories to merge, the event doesn't feel relevant or big at all. It's more like "Oh right... there is the other half of the characters who just magically appeared out of nothing." The turn based combat feels repetitive and I tried to avoid it as much as I could after the first 3 hours of gameplay. The map is just a huge, boring to look at easter egg. I was pretty disappointed in the game as you can see and I won't be buying any of the sequels.
