Great story, but needlessly frustrating

The core gameplay mechanic of this game is largely inspired by Resident Evil: you need to explore the level, gathering items in order to solve puzzles so you can get keys to access the previously locked parts of the level; repeat. Now for the review; let's start with the good points: 1) the story is great, and you learn about it bit by bit, as your characters are progressing in their investigation 2) each characters is fully voiced, and have their own lines of dialog for describing their surroundings and comment on what they read or find 3) the levels are varied and the ambience is creepy. You get occasional scare jumps, but not too many Now for the most annoying flaws: 1) permadeath does not make sense for this game: there is absolutely no replay value in running around in the level to fetch the same damn items to solve the same damn puzzles. It is just boring. What's worse is that some episodes can last longer than a full hour! Thankfully permadeath can be disabled, but only for the easiest difficulty level. 2) some of the puzzles are very cryptic and/or complex: it may not be an issue for all players, but in my case, I'm playing for the story, and those Myst-level puzzles are just stopping my progression for too long. I had to follow a walkthrough to skip the most convoluted ones. 3) the game is unfair at times: there are some spots where the game asks you to confirm performing some action. You will likely lose a few characters to those spots, since they are not all obvious death traps. This wouldn't be much of an issue if there wasn't the looming threat of having to restart the whole episode! There are some minor flaws, but this review is long enough already. In conclusion, apart from the "All your characters are dead; now you'll have to waste the 30 next minutes of your life doing boring things if you want to progress further" and the "How could I have guessed THAT?" moments, it was still pretty enjoyable, and the story was really worth it.

Cthulhu horror at its finest.

This game just popped out of nowhere on GoG during the October sale and after being a little disappointed with Amnesia: Rebrirth I decided I would give this a go and I have to say that it was well worth it. In this game you start out as Daniel who goes to see a writer called Husher at his house to find out why he has not met his deadline over a book but when Daniel arrives the door is unlocked but no one is in the house. After searching the house Daniel finds a strange door that should not exist and decides to check out what is behind the door before he too goes missing. Three days have passed and Daniels ex-wife and his boss are worried that he has gone missing and then the first chapter begins. In the game you have a bunch of character to pick from at the start of each chapter each with thier own strengths and weaknesses as well as a personal item that can help them out or at least help you get into the mind of the character. The best thing about these character is that none of them have plot armour, none of them are the chosen one and it just takes one small mistake to get that character killed and then lose them forever. So if you decide to blindly run around the house opening doors without a care and touching everything without forethought then you will probably get everyone killed in the process. This game does not hold your hand and unlike some other horror games, there is no wooble vision, no enemies chasing you down and hitting you for damage, there is no scripted chase sequence, no, what there is in this game is a sudden and violent death and then that is it for that character and it is so great to have such a change of pace from the usual suspects that in this current climent just essentially make the same game as Amnesia: The dark descent over and over again. So if you want a damn hard horror game that will keep you on your toes and actually make you work to survive then get this game.

Best horror game right now

So first the good things: best horror game i ever played, and i played many. It's tense and the tension always stays high because the game can be hard. The game is beautiful, the horrors do their job and the gameplay is awesome. The story is fun. It gets pretty dark but not too dark and with different characters each olay feels a bit different, thanks to their different opinions. I finished the game on hard without losing any characters, but that took a lot of tries. There was one event in the asylum that took me very many tries. The game honestly felt bugged. I think the reason for the event almost killing me instant was because my pc at that time couldnt run the game at 60fps. But i beat it anyways. I love this game. We really got blessed lately with really good horror games like this, tormented souls and others. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes horror games. This one is different but also really fun to play.

Really?

First of all, i like the visual design of that entity. very spooky and scary. Story: Great one. But the Puzzles: ... , really? Well, I like Games with good Puzzles. No Game should be too easy. But this... , you cant imagine what ive been through. It is no challenge, it is not difficult, it is just absolute Frustration at its finest. Way too unfair, no Instructions and if there are some, they are not precice enough. I couldnt figure out the solutions of the bigger Puzzles, so I had to watch a walkthrough. It is no Joke, i had to hold myself back all the Time. And the really bad Thing about that is; The Amount of Frustration whiped out the positive Aspects of the game. I had nearly no Fear or nervosity anymore. Just Rage and Disappointment. It is sad, but the misbegotten Riddles and Puzzles destroyed my Experience with it. This Game should have been more than just a Troll-experience.

A really SCARY horror game

I'm quite a hardcore horror fan since childhood and I've seen like all horror movies. Nothing really scares me anymore. When it comes to horror games, I've only played a handful of them, and the most scary ones I've played are Layers of Fear, Kholat and Darkness Within. I would say Song of Horror is a combination of all of them in some way. I'm currently playing Chapter 3 and I just had to turn off the game for a while since my nerves couldn't handle it. The big difference with this game compared to the other three I mentioned is that you can actually die! And you only have limited lives. If all your characters die, then you're smoked and have to restart the chapter. That takes the game into another level of focus and horror feeling. I don't really dare to do anything in the game without being extremely cautious. Yes, there are a lot of jump scares, but also slow scares like the whole atmosphere. The minigames are not that creepy, but the thought of a minigame could appear anywhere and kill your character is horrible which will boost the atmosphere a lot. The bad parts with the game are probably that the voice acting is pretty bad. And as an adventure gamer, I want to hear the character talking while clicking on something, even if the person is alone and no one can listen. In this game it's just "hmm....ooh" etc. Like The Sims or something. If this game would be patched, please change the voice acting. That French sounding guy in chapter two was just sounding terrible. But as a whole, this is the scariest game I've played this far so I can totally recommend it.
