Old-school shooter just like you love'em
In-depth video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0RCgTt0uRc A linear experience peppered with 90s clichés, Soldier of Fortune is an honest-to-god old-school shooter. Enjoyable to play, even if it's a bit of pain in the ass sometimes with the diabolical enemy placement. The gunplay is really good, and the movement is what you'd expect from an era where Arena shooters still reigned supreme. It also includes a very in-depth body damage system which can be a bit gruesome even for today's standards.

Our first introduction of John Mullins!
Typical story for most of the old FPS games (and movies!) about stolen nukes. Apart from that, it’s a pretty good game. The graphics are old (of course), but you travel to many different locations for your missions. An FPS game like they were made at the good old days, i.e. pure action. To have to go forward towards your objective in each mission and not letting anyone and anything to stop you with “side quests”, as is the case in modern wanna-be FPS fun park games… The game ends rather abruptly as it prepares the setting for the second part. Also, I really liked Mullins’ voice!

Great Gore But That's About It
Like someone else noticed, the game's gibbing and overall violence are it's sole strength. For what it's worth, it's really damn good. Limbs, heads, and torsos get blown open in gruesome fashion. I frequently took a shotgun and a high-caliber pistol into every mission just for a chance to tear some people up. Being made on the Quake II engine, movement is quick, guns feel good to shoot, and combat is satisfying enough to get you from one level to the next. But that's just it -- it's satisfying enough. I found myself realizing just how identical every firefight started to feel around the halfway point. Most enemies have the same few set behaviors, despite separate skins. Things do eventually get shaken up with bullet-resistant armor and high-powered weapons, but it's a minor challenge at best. You're free to pick an arsenal of weapons to bring into every mission, but you'll eventually just resort to grabbing whatever each enemy uses as their primary weapon once you run out of ammo. By the time I hit the final boss, I was almost wishing that it could've ended sooner. The story is typical fare, and at the very least there's some self-awareness of it. It mostly exists just to string you along and connect the various levels, of which there's some decent variety. Underground subways, trains, high rise buildings, and villages are just some of the places you'll go. It could be worse, really. The final few levels took place in what I can only describe as thematically appropriate areas. I won't spoil them for you. Overall, you could do a hell of a lot worse than Soldier of Fortune. I enjoyed my time with it, and I'm glad I played it. Having said that, I won't try to up-sell you on a mostly generic shooter. If you're a gore-hound, this game is essential. If not, maybe look elsewhere.

Decent romp
One of the main things that still holds up to this day in SoF is the damage system. Visually impressive for the time in which the game was released and surprisingly complex for the Quake 2 engine. As for the game itself, while short, it has pratically no filler. Missions have a decent amount of variety (still, there are some repeated ones like the Iraq mission) while being fun to play through. You basically go around the world. I think the major flaw that this game has is the difficulty. Playing this on Medium, the game had one or two difficulty spikes while maintaining a consistent level of difficulty (a very low one at that). Eventually it starts to get dull when you destroy waves of enemies with just a 9mm. Still, I don't think the difficulty affects much in the fun factor of the game. You should get this on a sale or something, and you'll have something nice to play for the next 4-4.5 hours,
