Maybe the best Silent Hill game so far

This is a strong entry in the Silent Hill series with a story that is so deep and layered that it is really fun to explore. After having completed the game for the first time, it motivated me a lot to immediately go into New Game+. No other Silent Hill game gave me this motivation before. The first run automatically gives you the worst end, so be prepared to do a few rounds. And New Game+ is not just the same repetition. It omits tedious stuff from the first run but instead adds more items and locations to explore. Now I'm in the third run and the game is still not getting boring, still offering new insights. The combat system can be seen as an enhancement of Silent Hill 4's combat system. Once you get used to it, it can be fun. But it will never become a walk in the park, no matter how strong you become. This is survival horror after all. You're supposed to have respect even of the weakest enemy. And don't be ashamed of running away from enemies where possible. Yes, weapons have limited durability and will break. In other games gun ammunition is limited, so it's essentially the same mechanics. Instead of ammo, here you'll find new weapons and repair kits along the way. All in all, difficulty and length are just right, in my opinion. And New Game+ keeps you motivated to continue playing. If you don't mind a mystic Japanese mountain village setting instead of an American small town, this game is a great experience. Even though it's damn expensive, it's worth every buck. For me, this is definitely the Game of the Year. Oh, and it runs perfect on Linux with Wine.

Honest Review from a Series Newcomer

Having entered the Silent Hill universe via the acclaimed Silent Hill 2 Remake, my anticipation for Silent Hill F was incredibly high, fueled by both the hype and the promise of the franchise's return. Unfortunately, for those of us whose first taste of the series was the psychological tension of SH2, Silent Hill F proves to be a significant letdown. SH2 established a high bar for horror - it was a masterclass in slow-burn tension and deep-seated psychological terror that genuinely delivered the "heebie jeebies." That game made the environment feel personal and the monsters feel symbolic. In stark contrast, Silent Hill F feels heavily focused on the elaborate, often strange, religious and cult iconography. While I understand that this emphasis may appeal to long-time fans steeped in the series' lore, I found that the sheer volume of "weird religious stuff" over-diluted the actual fear factor. The game quickly traded compelling, character-driven dread for high-concept spectacle, losing the chilling intimacy that made the SH2 Remake so effective. I played for a couple of hours hoping the tone would shift, but ultimately, the disappointment led me to return the game. I believe the developers may have misjudged the core appeal that brought a new generation of players to the franchise through the SH2 Remake. For newcomers expecting that same blend of unsettling atmosphere and psychological horror, Silent Hill F is, regrettably, a missed opportunity and a let-down.

An amazing Spin-Off to an amazing series

First I would like to draw a convenient line for this review in stating that this is not a numbered entree in the series and it is indeed a spin-off and the review will be from that prospective. If the game was a numbered entree then the score would be a lot lower. The game really holds your hand. Like a lot. an objective telling you what to do every 5 minutes. (But thinking back on it, It could be tied to the themes if you're really generous). This didn't annoy me too much but if your comparing this to the original, where it just puts you in an environment and you figure out where to go from there you will be disappointed. Combat gets very tiresome/boring (after 4 play-throughs). The combat is a bit souls like where the goal is to counter attacks or dodge. Once you learn an enemies attack pattern it will be easy. There is also no enemy that you cannot beat which could be seen as a downside for horror games. I recommend the highest difficulty if you want to feel anything from the combat. Its not scary. Not at all. This game is very much a horror from the prospective of the main character and it makes sense in the story but it fails to scare the player. Sound and visuals: Both incredible. Asthetics are amazing and sound/music great. (I believe there is a vine boom in a cut scene that I didn't notice until NG+) I really enjoyed the story. The horror elements and the mindset of the protagonist makes sense and fits the setting very well. The story is clear in the first play-through but in NG+ and up you get new cut-scenes and new documents to find that and prospective and nuance to the story. Some would argue parts of the story is "Woke" but the game really does a good job adding nuance which is a god-send in modern games. This is probably the best thing Konomi has released in a decade and with the and the fact that its on GOG so soon after release is amazing.

Nearly perfect SH game

I massively enjoyed SH2 last year and I can confidently say that this game is not as good as that but its damn near close. The story and setting is very unique to the series and the scares IMO were really well done. Protagonist is very likeable, like James was in SH2. Both have flaws that start exposing themselves as you progress. Puzzles were IMO done much better than in SH2. I had to use some guides for that game but this was alot more straightforward. I honestly love this game but the combat is definetly not great. Its what holds it back in being my favorite SH game.

Well done Game

This review is based on my first four hours with the game, so my opinion may change later. Technical Performance: The developers did a solid job using Unreal Engine. It’s not flawless, but it performs better than most games out there. The game runs smoothly, and my PC doesn’t sound like a jet engine. The only issue I’ve noticed so far is a strange graphical glitch during cutscenes, it looks like V-Sync isn’t working properly on single objects in zhe Scene. Outside of that, gameplay is clean and stable without Issues. Atmosphere and Setting: I really enjoy the japanese setting. The village, environments, and character designs are beautifully crafted and create a strong, immersive atmosphere. The sound design and music are excellent so far. Hearing enemies from a distance or as they approach is intense and thrilling. The japanese voice actors are outstanding. Combat System: You have a fast attack and a heavy one. The heavy attack can paralyze enemies for a few moments, making them more vulnerable, so you can follow up with quick strikes. There is also a dodge button and a counter mechanic. Countering isn’t too difficult, you can lock onto enemies, which widens the timing window for blocking (but also drains your mental stability). So far, the enemies I have encountered were stunned afterwards, similar to using the heavy attack on R2. Weapon Durability and Tension: Weapons can break, but you can repair them. It hasn’t been a major issue yet and i have three pipes atm., but I suspect it encourages avoiding unnecessary fights later on. That said, it’s genuinely thrilling to be trapped in a tight space and forced to flee from an enemy. The game does a great job of making you feel vulnerable. Power-Ups and Shrines: You can find power ups in form of trinkets or buy them from shrines, which also serve as save points. One example is a power up that reduces enemy vision and another one giving you more health, helping you sneak through tough situations or just survive them. To buy them, you trade items for “Praying Points”, the game’s currency. Some items exist just for this purpose, while others are healing items, so you’ll need to think carefully before selling. Puzzles and Exploration: The puzzles I have encountered so far had a good balance, not too easy, not too hard (on the hard difficulty). They aren’t spoon fed and the character doesn’t talk to herself to give hints. No radio guy either. Nothing on the map has been marked that I wouldn’t have checked myself, which keeps exploration rewarding. Story and Themes: I haven’t seen much of the story yet, but the intro hints at themes of parental abuse. A small note involving foxes, the present shrines and something else i will not spoiler, also suggests something more that will go in in that regard. It’s still relatively early, but the tone is promising. Price and Value: Yes, the game costs €80, which is steep, but so far I’m satisfied with what I’ve gotten. (They’re lucky I’m doing my spooky month.) I ’m genuinely glad Konami delivered a proper single-player experience without microtransactions or shady practices. That they gone back into that is kinda incredible, after they went full in with Pachinko and NFTs. I’ll update this review after a full playthrough
