Steady old car with fresh coat of paint

Quick review for those unfamiliar with the game: Rogue Trooper is a comic book series adapted into a third person cover based shooter. It focuses on the titular character attempting to hunt down the Traitor General who in a shocking twist, betrays his own side and ends up ensuring the death of all of Rogue's comrades. The shooting is solid conceptually and in execution. Which is good, seeing as how its what the moment-to-moment gameplay is based on. There are mutiple weapons based on different attachments to the main gun, and the main gun has different tech tricks you can perform with it. As one example, the player can deploy the gun as a automatic turret and create crossfire while only controlling one soldier. Getting new guns and toys is based on a salvage system, where dead enemies and piles of trash can be used to convert into generic resources. These resources in turn can become upgrades and ammo. For those new to the game, its a well recommended 7.5/10, rounded up to 4 stars for GOG. Unambitious, but the game does well at it aims too. Now for those who played this game before: Graphics: Range from quite nice looking to better, but not that much better. NPC models look okay, but level geometry remains untouched, and therefore is quite angular and jutting. Lighting can be a treat, texture work is nicely detailed, but the game world can feel a bit barren compared to more modern games with more clutter. The biggest tell for the game's age are the completely untouched animations, which prove most akward looking in the games cutscenes. The game is now native widescreen, and flawless goes to whatever resolution fits your monitor. So that's nice. Sound: Pretty much untouched. Controls: Tweaked. Cover is now automatic, which works 95% of the time. Grenades can be only thrown a fixed distance now, but micro mines are the same. Summed up: Mild to nice improvements, but nothing life changing. Also some minor bugs added, at the time of this writing.

It's Exactly What I Expected

If you played and liked Rogue Trooper, you'll like this. It's exactly the same, but with improved graphics, lighting, and ultrawide monitor support. As a benchmark, I'm using an overclocked 970 and I'm able to run a solid 60 FPS at 3440x1440. The story is a little hokey, the foreshadowing is blatant and the controls don't feel as smooth as they could. It pretty much feels the exact same as the original, it just looks much better.

"Sold As-Is"

For fans of 2000AD, as well as the original Rogue Trooper, this might seem like a fantastic way to dust off some memories. It isn't. The studio this remaster was outsourced to did a decent job updating the graphics and making the game playable on modern hardware. This came at the expense of slippery, broken controls, toning down and censoring some of the character designs, removing the cover controls and replacing it with a "sticky" cover system, and inaccurate and broken facial animations. The only things I can truly praise about this set is that the "Collector's" edition comes with a lot of goodies

Short thrill ride

Very short game that will keep you up for a few nights. It is a lot of fun for a shooter, but not too much to rave about. Pros: - Extremely enjoyable atmosphere from the visuals and music to the amusing opinions of your team. - Not too much repitition. It always feels like you are getting somewhere and doing something new. - Small but versatile weapons choices that are all useful in certain situations (though I am a stickler for that stock GI Rifle). - Controls are acceptable (sometimes they are a pain) and weapons are very accurate (short bursts = headshots). Cons: - Short game, although I might not have liked it if they tried to drag it out. This one is a question of taste. - Third person view. Trying to use your shotgun in close quarters when you are staring at Rogue's blue butt is agrevating. It does not always get in the way, but when it does, it REALLY does. - Context dependant controls. Want to jump on that ledge? You only can if you are standing in the EXACT spot the programers made for jumping up to climb. You have the perfect headshot lined up? Well, Rogue is "stuck" to cover stratching his blue balls. Overall, it is a fun game, and worth it on sale for under $10.

The game i've wanted to play...

Many years ago, i did knew about the game but the original rogue trooper did have many issues on the past and there was less fixes on pc version. When i did knew about this redux, it completely changed what i've did see instead of the original game. After installing the game, developers fulfilled what they promised in this redux, it works for all areas of current hardware and hey, it's very well updated, I was able to play it with kb+m without needing a controller, i did see comments about bad controls, when i progressed until finishing the campaign....gameplay is superb and controls is all good, thats why i did mention first, it's very well updated and fixed the game. First of all, props to developers who made it wonderful and playable game, doesn't matter if its short game, its really fun to play. I'd recommend for those want to play and having fun if its pure action and good story, this game might be for you, also its bit challenging too.
