Good, borderline great.
First things first: If you like point and click adventures, this is a must play. The artwork IS weird but trust me, it will grow on you. Or at least fade into near non-noticeable regions after a while. Day of the Tentacle had weird artwork, so had Grim Fandango and a few others that grew to be timeless classics. So yeah, don't let that get between you and the game and take the plunge. The longer version: I'm one of those old farts who grew up with the series, so it pretty much hits the mark for me, but yeah, I can see that this might not be everyone's cup of tea. There are a few really sweet moments that I found nice and touching. Again, probably because I'm old and sentimental. But if you're the kind of person who gets in a 30 min. session of DOOM Eternal everyday before breakfast... well, then you might find this borderline romcom trash. My main beef with Ron Gilbert is how he always manages to make the story his personal brand of weird. If you remember the endings of Monkey 2 or Thimbleweed Park, you know what I'm on about. This is actually what keeps me from giving it a solid 5 stars. Overall, my reasoning would be that this game should be much more polarizing and thus get a lot more mixed reviews. But I can see that it gets more love than I thought it would and I guess that's a good thing too. And probably well deserved. It seems to be just the right kind of weird.
