Description
Phantom Doctrine is a strategic turn-based espionage thriller set at the peak of the Cold War. Drawing on a wide variety of influences and capturing the subtle intrigue of classic spy films, the game thrust the player into a mysterious world of covert operations, counterintelligence, conspiracy and paranoia.

As the leader of a secret organization known only as The Cabal, you are charged with preventing a global conspiracy that seeks to pit leader against leader, and nation against nation. By carrying out secret missions, investigating classified files, and interrogating enemy agents, a sinister plot is uncovered. With the clock ticking, it must be thwarted in order to save the world from an unthinkable fate.
  • A Deep Single-Player Story Campaign: the 40+ hour single-player campaign mode features a rich, gripping plot woven with numerous historical events and characters to bring the terrifying reality of the Cold War to life from a unique perspective.
  • Next-generation turn-based combat: offers unprecedented flexibility of movement and actions, including variable Overwatch modes and assault-oriented Breach ability.
  • Expanded battlefield: assets can be positioned around the world, enabling you to call for assistance in the heat of battle. But the enemy can also bring in reinforcements, including heavy weapons and even air support. Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.
  • Knowledge is power: Improve your chances of success by infiltrating mission locations with undercover operatives. Attempt to stay one step ahead of enemy agents, who are also preparing to spring their own devious traps.
  • Lurk in the shadows with fully-fledged stealth gameplay: Clandestine operations can be completed with suppressed weapons, silent takedowns and cutting edge Cold War technology.
  • Take charge of the crucial counterintelligence operation: Recruit from both the KGB and the CIA, the criminal fraternity, or even utilise the unique talents of subjects of secret government experiments. Weapons, resources and contacts can be secured around the globe, enabling you to command from afar. But if the situation requires a hands-on approach, you will be locked, loaded and ready to fight.
  • Innovative Investigation Board: Utilizing a classic pinboard and string approach, the Investigation Board is the hub from where cases, locations and individuals can be researched to reveal new missions, resources and technologies. In Phantom Doctrine, investigation and intel is an active and vital element of success.
  • Multiplayer Battles: lose friends and make new enemies in ruthless online multiplayer matches. Experience the deviousness and lethality of Phantom Doctrine in easily-accessible and action-packed 1v1 skirmishes.
  • Utilize ruthless Technology: New capabilities can either be stolen from the enemy or researched yourself, and then ruthlessly used to your advantage. Often experimental and morally dubious, brainwashing, interrogation, body engineering and chemical enhancement are all fair game as you extract information by any means necessary.
  • Fully customizable character creation: Operatives can be customized each time they need a new identity. Change their appearance, forge their documents, train them in the deadly arts and send them back into the field.
  • Carefully Designed handcrafted levels: The combination of large, handcrafted maps and meticulous, smart design ensures great visual and gameplay variety. Travel the world of the 1980s in the grip of the Cold War on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
  • Replayable modular campaign: a wide array of mechanics ensures markedly different playthroughs. A unique experience is guaranteed by randomly generated character names and backgrounds, algorithmically populated and adapted maps, and randomized intelligence snippets.
  • A spy thriller from two different points of view: Play as either a former KGB counterintelligence operative or a renegade CIA wet work commando. Each has to come to terms with the truth and challenge the global conspiracy. Complete the campaign to be rewarded with an additional protagonist in Extended Playthrough.
  • No mission is too big or too small: whether infiltrating a busy government facility to surgically assassinate a target, or mounting a full frontal assault on an enemy base. With a plethora of optional objectives, additional loot and intelligence to collect, it is only up to you how complex each mission will be. Your decisions make all the difference.

Exciting combat

This is actually a nice game resembling X-COM dynamics. There are some differences, though. You don't start combat right away. The first phase is the disguised movement phase, where you place your units in advantageous positions (in case you are detected), but it is perfectly possible to complete missions without combat if you are careful. The game has different dynamics for a regular player 1- There is no limited ammo. You can reload your weapons at will. But the drawback is it takes away your action point, so one should consider this. 2- Weapons are upgradeable, and attachments are addable. 3- You skill up your units and choose proficiency in weapons. This adds several benefits, they spend less AP on weapons use , quick reload etc. 4- Your agents are all upgradeable via MK-Ultra program. That is discoverable later on and improves gameplay significantly. 5- Jumping out of windows, sniping enemies from rooftops, executing breach mechanics (the game has a very powerful breach mechanic, which is great to execute) and decimating enemies with overwatch crossfire is great fun. The only few things I can criticize the game with is : 1- No daylight missions (yep, only tutorial mission is on daylight) 2- Missions become repetitive through the late game. (and the maps are limited so the player get to used to them after a while) Verdict: That is one hell of a quality game. Play it, you will have fun with it , I promise!

Solid game with a few design flaws.

For those who like turn based games this will catch your interest. Combat is pretty good requiring a lot of thought into every action which is nice. Complimenting the sandbox feel of the missions. Not to mention there is tangeble benefits from collecting the collectables in game. In the way of vital intel and loot to give you things like new agents, weapons, gandgets, etc. Does get repetitive as you do get a certain rythem going making stealth a little easy until later on where you have to be a bit more careful with who you kill and in what order. Combat does have some rng which can be frustrating mainly with the dodging mechanic. Providing that one rng frustration. Customization is solid with a lot of options to chose from which is always welcome. AI is actually quite good once you get into combat. Rewarding careful actions as rushing tends to get your agents killed. Maps while well designed for combat. For stealth they can be easily navigated due to seeing where a enemy is going to walk in a predictable pattern which I'd argue makes it to easy for a strategy game. Not to mention stealth actually penalizes xp which baffles me as it forces you to do combat to level up with any kind of speed. Story to me is satisfctory enough to get you to continue. Its not going to wow you, as its more of "its fine" kind of good. Enjoyable just not the most memorable. Despite a few hicups with the combat and a few weird decisions is a good turned based strategy stealth game. With two campaigns that will take you time to complete its very much worth the money.

Solid XCOM itch-scratcher

Yes, the comparison to XCOM is unavoidable, but this doesn't detract in any way. I've just finished playing this through in the standard campaign mode (ie, not the extended campaign) and it was a mostly positive experience all the way through. That said, there was still _something_ missing for this be a game I could rave about, but I just can't put my finger on it. I had avoided this game for a while because of some negative review I had read making me - incorrectly - believe that it was not quite a full game. On the contrary, the balance between story and side missions keeps the game going for a long time. You CAN control how long it lasts - either rush through the story missions and face a steep increase in difficultt or take your time with side-missions and build up your squad and experience a mostly flat difficulty curve. For better or worse: - There are a number of different mission types/modes, but they do get repetitive - almost a chore - after a while - It took quite a long time before I started recognizing maps, and even so I still had new maps thrown at me all the way to the end. - Depending on mission type, most maps were still new experiences when I encountered them again - There seemed to be no end to the base upgrades, although it seemed limited at first. I still kept unlocking valuable buffs and upgrades all the way to the end, and there was still more to be had if I had held off on doing the final mission. - The investigation boards and especially clicking on keywords in the same few redacted documents that are recycled and recycled gets old quickly. So to the point that I just wished that all pieces of evidence would just come with the keywords ready and done. - The in-mission action UI felt a bit unwieldy at first, but after a few missions it starts to feel natural. - The base facility UIs and selecting and assigning agents took a lot longer to befriend. All in all a solid piece and entertaining experience.

Not What I Hoped

I came into this looking for an XCOM style of experience. In a number of ways I received that. I got the home base, characters that go through different experiences, permadeath, research. However, in many others I got a very odd experience that didn't gel. Dossiers didn't make much sense in terms of how I interacted with them, it just seemed like an almost pointless clicking mini-game that wasn't even a game. Stealth was not much to speak of unless you can sneak up on someone with no witnesses or cameras, no silenced weaponry in the early game. And when I did manage to pull off a perfect in and out mission, including secondary objectives, without having to fire a gun that was in the main storyline it wasn't reflected in the dialogue that took place afterward which really hollowed out the experience for me. It does do some cool things, like multiple ways of completing research, figuring out how to deal with potentially back-stabbing agents, and solid customizability. The part that lead to me quitting so early in my gameplay experience was the a bug I encountered repeatedly. In a seemingly random fashion, I would choose to open fire on an enemy and the animation would freeze with my character pointing a gun at them and about to fire and never doing it. And it would stick there. This happened at least twice and the only remedy I could get was to exit the mission and come back. When I had already completed the objectives and was just getting into evac it was the last straw. The fact that I didn't even care enough about the story or the gameplay experience to seek what forums had to say tells me and hopefully should tell you enough that this game isn't worth the time. Go play XCOM again.

A turn based strategy game

A decent game, definitely captivating for about 6-10 hours, but it got repetitive after that for me. If you were ever a fan of commandos, this would suit you!
