Ostriv aims to raise the bar of city-building experience by adding a huge amount of possibilities and removing annoying limitations. It allows for truly organic town layouts without the grid and angle restrictions on a three-dimensional landscape. The goal is to make player's creations to become alive and believable communities where real-life problems would arise, thus making the late game a new challenge rather than a repetitive chore.

In-depth details, such as NPC's constructing buildings -- things do not just magically poof into existance, but rather the workers are seen carrying lumber, bricks, etc., and actually building things.
Mechanics are similar to other games of this type: provide housing for villagers, along with infrastucture (church, tavern, schools, etc.) and food, water, clothing. Produce items to trade with NPC cities via land connections or water (boats).
Some things in this game, which I like, and haven't seen in other games of this type: a shop needs to be built which repairs the carts and wagons used by villagers -- the carts and wagons wear-out over time and need to be repaired. Bigger wagons which are pulled by draft animals require animals which are bred/raised by villagers. Fishing is done via boats, which have to be built...these, and others, do not just magically poof into existance when you build a fishing dock, but have to be built and maintained which requires resources.
The extra layers of depth provided by needing to build carts, fishing boats, wagons, etc., as well as shops to maintain them, make this game much more immersive and I highly recommend this game.
Graphics are really good...great detail when you zoom in to watch villagers at their tasks.
Really satisfying city builder in a central-european modern era ambiance, where you are not playing with the witcher but the village he is passing through. Worth a try if you like the genre.

Ostriv is a good city-builder game with many lovely details. It is situated in 18th century Ukraine, which makes it even more interesting. Don't expect any magic, but love for details any some nifty situations you will have to solve while letting your village grow.
I started playing the game quite now some years ago. It is a game that doesn't make you feel bad for saving and playing another day.
Ostriv currently lacks a proper tutorial to explain the game characteristics, but the gist can be distilled from in game descriptions of various buildings. This can lead to survival of the first winter being a matter of trial and error, but once one understands the basic gameplay mechanics it is a remarkably enjoyable village management game that does away by the combat element that mars various other examples of the genre. In my experience few games do both management and combat equally well and Ostriv rightly concentrates on making the village management the sole purpose of the game.
Watching the villagers go about their business constructing their community and producing the needs for their survival and later on prosperity is a calming experience that can be quite addictive. As the game is still under development the gameplay will be extended with additional features to provide even more depth to growing your own little frontier community into a thriving civic entity able to continue attracting outsiders to migrate into the town.
