Great, Complex Transport Game
As someone who never played the original Transport Tycoon or this OpenTTD before now, I have to say it's a great deal of fun. In essence, you generate a piece of land area and go about setting up transportation networks across road, rail, sea, and air to turn a profit for your company. The Good: So many options to decide among. Do you want to build a highway and use trucks for that industry or expand your rails to service it by train? If it's in the middle of nowhere, maybe an airport will do. I generally do not get into 'sandbox' games, but I found it very compelling redesigning my railroads and highways to improve efficiency (and solve traffic jam problems of my own creation). Seeing the towns grow in response to your effectiveness is gratifying, and the designs of your transit lines really is limited only by your creativity. Also, adding mods is quite simple (I have not done much of this), there is an in-game menu which connects to them; pick what you want and push download (descriptions can be rather vague though). The Bad: For some persons, the dated graphics will be unpleasant (I think there are improved ones out there), but gameplay is the real draw here. The menu system is a bit clunky and finding your way to the actions you want to take can be tricky for a newcomer (there are some great video tutorials out there on youtube that helped me a lot; I strongly recommend them). There are no built-in scenario goals/missions, so if you need structured objectives, you'll have to make your own (there may be structured scenarios in the download mods that others have made). The amount you can do even on a small map is overwhelming at first so it can be tough to figure out how to start. The Bottomline: Once you gain a handle on the basics things start to get quite engaging. Seeing all of your vehicles everywhere is amusing and the menus aren't too bad once you understand them. Good times. On top of that, it's free so there's no real risk to trying it.
