A fine mix of both 4X and RTS

Northgard scratches my nostalgic itch for both Age of Empires and Civilization, with RTS gameplay mixed with zone-based expansion and development which feels a lot like the city-based economy of a traditional 4X game in real time. This zone structure puts real constraints on the pace of expansion and aggression, encouraging fun multiplayer gameplay between players of a variety of skill levels. Better players can still rush or macro you off the map, but it's less frustrating than in AoE or StarCraft because you still get some time and space to actually play the game, even while being utterly stomped. Meanwhile, the variety of win conditions and useful creep/PvE fights mean that players can be as confrontational as they want to be -- from a bloody deathmatch to a peaceful Eurogame, and anything in between. The flip side of the zones and win conditions is that Northgard can also be frustrating for new players. Unlike the constant growth of most RTS games, Northgard adds in a complex economic system requiring you to balance a wide variety of resources and needs throughout the game, You don't just accumulate resources and spend them on one-time "purchases" or units and buildings (as in AoE or StarCraft); you also have to meet your people's constant and ever-increasing needs for food, firewood, happiness, money, etc. This isn't a game that you can play on cruise control, as you can completely wreck your own economy at nearly any stage of the game simply by overspending or neglecting a single resource. Several of of the victory conditons (esp. Commerce) allow strategies that are so non-interactive that they can feel like the game randomly ended out of nowhere! There's a decent amount of comeback potential, but that also means that it's relatively easy to lose a game that you were utterly dominating. Still, if you stick with it through the steep learning curve and occasional frustrations, Northgard will reward that effort with hours upon hours of engrossing gameplay.

A Mix of Features

It has several features from other games indeed. There are a few basic clans plus all of the DLC's. I prefer some clans over others. Clan of the Krakken has a supportive role but its armed forces are laughable IMHO. At least that was the impression the AI gave me after setting it in Hard or Extreme mode. On the other hand, the Raven clan might survive even if you configure it in easy mode, depending on the rest of the settings. Comment - Part 1 What I hate in the Hard and Extreme modes is that in single player games you might be busy dealing with some invader, either a wild animal or a monster or even a rival clan, and a bunch of monsters like a draugr Jotunn appears in one of your zones without a warning. If it were a rare event like the rat infestation or the fallen sailors, that would be fine-ish, I guess. The problem is that just seconds later they emerge at another point without letting you take some time to you rebuild your army or even your economy. But wait! There's more! They might show up a third and a fourth time in a row! This gets as serious as quickly convincing the other clans not to worry about you because sooner or later you'll end up being totally crippled without any serious intervention on their part. I think I'd read somewhere that they added that crappy feature to make long games be challenging in general, but it really needs to get balanced asap. NOTE on Part 1: The impact of the magically summoned monsters seems to have been reduced quite a lot several months later. Another thing that I don't understand is why the Mirkalf and the dwarves keep attacking you and decolonizing zones if you can't kill the outcasts in the previous zones. A rival clan has all the motivation to do so but why do these creatures behave like that? Even if I'm keen on exterminating them if deemed necessary, I do think such a behavior makes no sense there.

Meh...

Its not a bad game, its not a good game. It's not buggy. It's slightly interesteing but quickly boring. The major problem is that 90% of your focus time is on micromanaging workers. For example to build a building like a forge you have to select and place it on the map. Then assign a worker to build it. Then assign workers to staff it. Thats 3 operations to get it going, it should only be 1. Some of the mechanics are tricky an dtakes a couple play throughd to really understand, at which point the game becomes boring. Its an RTS with no speed control. Pause is a total game freeze, you can't assign, build, scroll, review anything while paused. There is no strategy to combat, just build as many fighters as you can and send the mob off to attack.

Great Systems. Flawed Learning Curve

Even while playing the campaign I (and judging from Reddit others) got stuck without clear indication of how to accomplish a goal. The mechanics themselves are extremely interesting and feel well balanced but learning them has been a test in patience. More on the positives I found the balance of building combat and expansion to be best in class. 4x games frustrate me with pace in one direction and a lot of RTS games become frustrating in the other direction. This splits the difference extremely well allowing space for creativity, thought and reaction without feeling like I am trapped in a 10 turn cycle of accomplishing it that can happen in 4X games.
