It tricked me to get good at micro

I bought Northgard because I was yearning for a Settlers-like experience. I wanted a game that I could casually play while listening to my favourite podcasts. Of course, it's nothing of the sort. My shock came from the multitude of things that can destroy your fragile economy. You can achieve proper stability in the late game. Still, the only genuine control factor is the population limit, as every newcomer strains your resources and hurts happiness--forcing you to expand, build, upgrade, and then expand some more. You can undoubtedly turtle, but a regular session against the AI comes with a constant reminder that you need as many villagers as possible. If you get a bunch that merely support their weight, at least they can serve as insurance if you come toe-to-toe with another ambitious player. But war is a definite IF in Northgard. The clans have various subtle strengths which can set you on your way to achieving a specific type of victory. Only the main challenge comes from reconciling your clan's powers with the available resources, the unforeseen opportunities, your urgent needs. If you don't care for 'hard times,' this game might be up your alley. The included campaign aims to introduce the primary mechanisms and victory conditions. However, the only reasonable way to learn is to get wrecked repeatedly in regular games. As such, you can quickly learn how everything works in the proper context right from the start. I'm certainly no fan of micromanagement. But unlike games where switching between control groups and activating specific abilities in the nick of time is the primary mechanism, Northgard emphasizes economy and workforce management. There are only three unit types, and battles are straightforward. This game is a weird beast. It reminds me of Rise of Nations, Settlers, Warcraft III, and others. However, every element works to produce good sessions and satisfying victories.

Well...

It looks good, the music is nice, it's a nice addition to the strategy cannon, but... I'm not sure how much replayability there is in this and it would be nice if things from other games were in it: Speed control slow/medium/fast gameplay this would be an absolute boon. Scaling is "off", you can play against the computer but, it really becomes a grind in the later stages of battle - yeah you can buy resources but it takes forever.

Last update breaks the fun

The 2.8.4.25963 patch breaks all the fun. * Sound suddenly stops playing * In single player mode you can no longer select the number of opponents (I see no use for this change...) * The UI isn't consistent any mode and too nested

Great RTS

I picked this game up because it was on sale for 50% off and I realized that I had not played a RTS in ages. 50+ in game hours later, and I'm still hooked. Definitely worth every cent I spent on it. As other have said, the game plays like a cross between Settlers, Age of Empires and Civilization, and it is a lot of fun. It's fairly easy to learn, but can be devilishly hard to master. There are many aspects to one's economy, never enough workers, and everything is a valuable resource - food to feed your clan, wood to build more buildings, stone to upgrade them, iron to improve your workers and warriors, gold to pay for just about anything, lore to learn new abilities, even happiness, which decides how quickly your clan grows. Mix in the fact that the map is divided into tiles, which have to be colonized (and often conquered) first, and most of them are unique in what type of and how many buildings they can support, and you can have some pretty hard to choices to make... And on top of everything, there's the neutral factions that will regularly invade your territory (kobold, draugr, or even just wolves), and the other players who don't exactly have your best interests at heart either, so you'd better not just focus on having a healthy economy but also a strong enough warband to defend and expand your territory with... All in all, a great gem of a game that rekindled my love for the whole RTS genre.

Great game, great RTS..

First of all - no, this is not new Warcraft, it is something completely different. The graphics are kind of the same type as original third Warcraft, but that's it - gameplay wise - completely different story here. I like the slower pace (in singleplayer), the variability of clans, the focus on economy over combat, while combat is required for ecomony expansion. It is... interesting approach to RTS. You need to capture zones - first zone must be explored, than cleared of enemy, then colonised. Each zone has limit of buildings, each building has limit of workers. You need to expand continuously... This creates pressure on existing economy, aside seasons (winter menas lower production), events and enemy attacks. Campaign is interesting, but so far (10h in game) not for the story. It is a great introduction to available clans, strategies, maps and mechanics. I like this game a lot!
