Myst V: End of Ages Limited Edition
Description

I'm a big fan of the Myst series I even liked UrU but V was simply terrible.
Gameplay :Most of the puzzles are pretty average and overall the game is quite short. The tablet while interesting never really feels like a complete mechanic. And with the new 3d environment you will find yourself asking "why cant I simply walk over there"
Graphics: the graphics are OK, not quite as nice as the pre-renderd stuff in IV and while at the time the new facial expressions were pretty high tech they just don't make it today and look worse than the old FMV action of the original.
Story: probably where the game sufferers the most, they took a very solid story and world introduced some crazyness with UrU then took it to a new level with V. overall it became to twisted an convoluted for me to care.
If you like myst stick with 1-4 . revelations makes a nice circular end to the series and is everything this game isnt. 5 will just ruin it for you.
I love Myst, even after playing this it is still my favorite videogame series. But regrettably, this is the weakest entry in the series. I feel it provides necessary closure for the series, and I think it probably would have been better had they been able to smooth things out enough, as many parts of it feel rushed, but for many reasons I likely will not be coming back to this as often as the other four.
For starters, this one takes on an oppressively dark tone. Starting with a note from Atrus that sounds almost like a suicide note, we are then plopped into the room where we first meet Atrus in the series with absolutely no explanation, ever, to why we are there.
Then, there is the fact that all dialogue from now adult Yeesha takes this self-loathing form that is really hard to take in many cases. The only other character is your typical "everything now days is evil, the only way to make things not evil is to put them back exactly the way they were" old guy.
And stepping out of the narrative for a second, the puzzle design in this game is HORRENDOUS. For starters, none of the control schemes feel right, and then if you opt for the free roam controls you will miss certain things because they don't like you not being in the *exact* right position. Also, this is the entry I cheated the most on because there is little to (mostly) no explanation to the puzzles (where as in previous entries you would typically have journals that would at least put you in the right mind set) and the worlds are too big for the puzzles where something on one side of the age changes something on the other, making it extremely tedious to try to do legitimately. Best age was the last one, where I was able to do around 90% of it without cheating.
Finally, the last bad thing I will touch on here is the ending. There are four REALLY long-winded endings, only one of which is good, and I actually had to cheat to figure out how to get the good ending, because that choice was not obvious.
I have been playing the Myst series since it began. I love all the games. But technology has been cruel and I cannot play Myst on my computers anymore. GOG.com has given me the greatest gift! I can play some of the Myst games again! I have Windows 10 now and none of my Myst CDs work with Win10. But on GOG, Myst 5 works wonderfully!! THANK YOU GOG! Please make all the Myst games compatible with Windows 10!!! I miss Riven and Exile and URU <3. THANK YOU!!!
Die hard Myst fan. Have played all the Myst games as they came out, but this one didn't have the spark the others had. I liked the game a lot, just didn't meet the standards of the others. A lot of really nice graphics but just didn't pull me in like the others. Would buy again.
End of Ages is a very good game. It has its problems, yet holds up well. With Win7 64bit there were no problems to report. Just install and play. No need to do any extra configuring.
The graphics are still quite good (in options you may need slide the settings up to max). Personally, I very much dislike the move away from fmv of earlier games but its tolerable. Overall, I was impressed how good it still looks.
The gameplay in this one allows from slideshow to free movement thanks to the 3d engine. I have always been disappoint in this as Riven (for example) looks better and is still just a fun if not more so.
There are also various bugs such as the tablet creatures becoming stuck along with the tablet or even just the tablet. Also, the writing done on the tablet can be very picky causing you to redraw over and over again until its just right.
There are no tutorials on what you need to put on the tablet, what to even do with it, or even what its for, so be prepared to be confused - it does take a while to learn what it can AND can't do.
Some of the puzzles were too much work for me, I really dislike the one puzzle where you have to go all over the place to gather into needed for it. And a few other puzzles I would have never tried the solution. Another puzzle I tried everything including the actual answer but nothing got the result - it wasn't until looking up what the answer was that prompted another try where it finally worked. And yet another one I actually did have the answer but didn't know it. Other puzzles I completed without even doing them as intended. And one whole age I completed in two hours or so (which is less time than I spent on being stuck on just one puzzle listed above that I had no working solution for). You will be puzzled with this puzzle game.
Even for 2012 its still a fun game. The story line is ok. I obviously don't like the story direction with Myst V and Uru so they will never receive higher scores than the first three Myst games [imo] - that and the lack of fmv, and the change to an 3d engine which just doesn't offer the incredible look of the earlier games. The ending also isn't as good.
So I recommend if your looking into Myst like games. It has its problems but holds up well enough to enjoy.
