Metal Fatigue is a real-time strategy game taking the genre to new heights - literally. Build and customize your massive Combots to dominate the three battlefield levels simultaneously - from orbit, to the surface, and even underground!
Develop your base and command your forces carefully - the enemy can appear from any direction, including above and below!
Choose from the warring factions - the Milargo, Neuropa or Rimtech are competing CorpoNations, each with their own technologies and research capabilities. Capitalize on their individual strengths and weaknesses for the optimum strategic advantage!
Customize and build giant Combots from thousands of unique robot part combinations - including such offensive and defensive options as Katana Arms, Power Shield, and Missile Torsos, and much, much more! Add conventional units like the battle-tank and missile car to round out your military might.
Battle throughout three continuous, multilevel areas - in orbit, on the surface, and underground! Build bases, research new weaponry and unit types, and engage the enemy on three different level simultanously.
30 solo play missions - each faction has its own unique ten-mission campaign. Follow the story of three estranged brothers, as they scavenge high technology from the ancient alien Hedoth to fight a war against their very own bloodline.
30 multiplayer maps & missions - up to eight players supported over LAN. Includes both cooperative and death-match modes!

Fun RTS - sligthly falwed.
SUMMARY
Get it, play it on easy and enjoy the story and some Mecha Role Playing. Don't expect an RTS revelation if you know the Starcraft or Warchraft series.
Pro TIPP: Zoom all the way out!
PROs:
* Unusual RTS concepts (Map has 3 layers, Robot + RPG mechanics)
* Engaging Story (must read text though)
CONs:
* Unit AI is dumb as bricks
* Missions usually devolve into a artillery unit slugfest (Play on easy to avoid and just enjoy the ride)
Metal Fatigue is a really fun one. It is complex enough to be attractive to more hardcore RTS fans, but not so much that would deter more casual players. The single player campaign builds up that complexity gradually with a nice learning curve.
The only resource is energy. You can gather thermal energy from lava lakes, or build solar panels.
You have to pay attention to not one, but three planes where the fight can take place:
- There are hovering platforms in the sky where solar panels are more efficient. Aerial units rule here so build up your air defenses.
- There is the ground, which is the standard level you can see in any other RTS games.
- There is the underground, where lava lakes are more abundant, and defenses can be really effective, as only vehicles fit in the tunnels. You can't cram your giant robots in there.
Oh, because the game is all about giant robots beating each other with various weapons, a thing that never gets old!
There are 3 factions with different Combots, as the giant robots are called. Do you prefer brute strengh and overwhelming melee? MilAgro will be your favorite faction! Would you rather hide in the shadows and snipe from a distance? Neuropa is your choice! Or are you, like myself, the balance guy, who likes to have a bit of everything? Rimtech is right for you!
The story revolves around these three factions, their findigs of alien artifacts, and the conflict that breaks out of it. The story is nothing to sing odes about but a fairly decent one nonetheless.
The three factions have their own music, and it is all magnificent! All of them perfectly fits that faction. It even dinamically changes between calm and conflict music which is still a rare thing today! I just LOVE the soundtrack!
I encountered only a few bugs, none of them game breaking.
All in all it's a really decent piece. If you like giant robots or RTS games, you should consider trying out Metal Fatigue. If you love both, then this game is a must have!
I don't know if this version was improved, but I remember enjoying this game, and dying a bit inside for every day I had to wait for it to come out. It was the perfect homage to classic Mecha anime and related cartoons growing up. Custom mech combat, 3 combat territories, support vehicles and buildings . . . it was what games like C&C and EARTH 2100 series games wanted to be (at least visually). Nothing like a long range combat with twin gattling arms, cannon torso (or legs), and Jet legs (or torso). Or on the ground, your gladiator of a combot with power sword, power shield, shielded body, etc. Loved that aspect of the game to all ends.
Sound: This is 2 parts, sound track and sound effects. At the time, I loved the sound track (sounded like military mixed with marching band). But, the unit sounds in the game are generic with most of the unit sounding robotic and lifeless.
Gameplay: Pretty good and fluid, even with the 3 levels of conflict (air, land, subterranean). The underground aspect was interesting to be sure, but was kinda meh, even though you had to for resources. The other two were spectacular, putting the mechs against each other on land or in the sky.
AI: The AI was competent, but there were times that it seemed to "cheat."
But that aside, there were bugs when playing this game, which I hope have been addressed in the GOG version (I remember getting deadlocked in the campaign a few times, or the Neuropa missions being unavailable even after putting the CD in). So, even if you skip the campaign and go to the quick play or multiplayer, you'll likely see where the game truly shines. May adjust my review pending on the GOG release.
I was just looking at all my old PC titles on CD and have still kept them all with original manuals thinking I would never have a PC low spec enough to ever play them again, but here we are and only months after I was thinking it would be great if they could port Metal Fatigue, and here we are. I didn't have to wait to buy this one.
