This gamehas some really interesting things going for it. maps with 3 layers (sky, ground and underground).
While tanks are almost useless in the sky, u can obviously not use jets underground.
there is not much diversity though. u can choose between 3 fraction. but the only difference between them (outside of how their units look) are the useable mech parts. anything else is the same. all 3 have same way to manage resources and same "little" units (not even the numbers differ).
So, while interesting in some parts, other parts are lackluster. but I just love seeing my mechs (Combots in this game) move in fomration and wreck havoc in enemy base.
Thank you Gog. now bring me Machines pls :D
First I must express my surprise of seeing Metal Fatigue on GOG. This was abandoneware as it gets. First, getting a copy of this game was almost impossible, and second, making it run (not run well, just run) was a pain. Now GOG got it and they made the necessary changes to make this game run well on new systems. Just buy it, download, and play. Thank you GOG for preserving gaming history!
Now about the game, it was a really fun and ambiciosu RTS. First it had 3D graphics which was pretty much a novelty at the beginning of century, and it didn't age badly. That's something good to say for such an old game. Then gameplay, we have 3 layers of combat, tanks, defense structures, but that's not why you get this game. COMBOTS! That's the real meat of this game. You build pilot crews, and you build combot parts. You pick a leg, a left arm, a right arm, and a torso, and each part has it's own thing. There are katana arms, machin gun arms, rocket lucher arms, shield arms, laser arms, punching arms, and that's just a small selection of the arms. Once you built your own unique combots you attack enemy bases, and you can sometimes retrieve enemy parts for being able to replicate them expanding your inventory of parts. You see a really cool combot with jump jet legs and you are going to want to attack it in the hopes of getting those jump jet legs. This is really fun, and it's a shame no other games has done this so well. Not let's talk gameplay. This game is very simple. Before you start each match you will build your base with a limited amount of resource and an almost-insta-build ability in a limited area of the map. Then when you start you gather energy (game's main resource) from lava pits and solar panels. Lava pits are usually underground and require workes for gathering, and solar panels are more effective in sky platforms. Defending your resources is the only most important thing after attacking the enemy. Like I said this game is really fun, and worth a try for sure.
I remember first playing this game, it was quite innovative for its time, with the multi-level RTS play with distinctive options for each of Orbit, Surface and Underground.
The giant robots feel weighty and the combat animations for melee (including some paired combat animations!) with the sound design really give the ComBots a solid feel overall, being able to specialise or generalise your bot designs for different tasks also gives a good amount of planning in addition to the moment to moment play.
Movement can sometimes feel a little on the slower side compared to modern titles, but on the other hand, this gives you a chance to react to changes in the state of play without a surprise strike costing you the game.(although it could certainly tip the scales)
The different factions have fairly good identies, each matching their bot options pretty well, RimTech's Bots are well rounded and clean, MilAgro's are heavy looking bruisers, and Neuropa's are sleek and alien. The ability to salvage enemy tech to use for yourself helps give micro objectives during play, as a sudden opportunity for a strong bot part could help round out a faction weakness, or help exploit an enemy.
Shoutout to the Mobile Wall, being able to fort up and then move your walls out as you expand your base is great, the dynamic walling is also well executed.
That said, the game isnt without its flaws, the AI is a bit limited and the pathfinding can be pretty bad, hovertrucks in particular.
The underground layer can be a slog to fight an entrenched foe, not being able to bring ComBots means lacking the ability to punch through strong defenses, generally if you have won in orbit and surface, the underground by itself is mostly a formality.
This version of the game is also missing the original RimTech faction soundtrack.
Overall I am having fun returning to this old classic, though a sequel or remaster would be amazing.
The campaign doesn’t really teach you what things do, which can leave you feeling lost at times.
It just says “build this,” and you’re left to figure out how it works on your own.
It took me a while to understand the game’s verticality and how much it actually affects gameplay.
It was kind of depressing to dominate the surface... only to be crushed by the mole people right after.
Still, it’s a great game, and the soundtrack is really good.
I definitely recommend it!
