I remember back in 1995, I was about 12 years old, and walked into a computer shop. And I saw the shop owner was playing a game on his PC, talking to dinosaurs and walking around beautiful wonderful castle. I didn't understand any of the gameplay but just got completely attracted. I asked about the game and got told that my home PC wasn't able to play it (without a cd-rom and fast enough processor). I did not ask for the name of game, and I never knew. A long time had gone by, but I still remember this game, and hope that one day i can find it and play it. Now i can do it~ Thanks to GOG.
The music sticks in one's head!!
The 3D FMV graphics are amazing for the time. Contains beautiful cut-scenes of flying dinosaurs. They must've been revolutionary back then.
There is a nice story to it and the puzzles are well thought.
There's a beautiful White Label box edition that I own. Either that, or the GOG version, you must own this game.
I will review the game, not the nostalgia. I am a big fan of Cryo games, especially the famous Dune, from which this game stems. Unfortunately Lost Eden does not stand up for the quality of its predecesor, aside from the great music by Stephane Picq who made the Spice Opera album, the soundtrack of Dune.
Lost Eden has some great graphics for its time, with pre-rendered graphics and animations. The artists were quite talented, creating some unique characters. The plot is about humans and dinosaurs working together, which might seem silly for some. But hey, it's a game, and this didn't make me enjoy the story less. There are many similarities in characters and story key points with Dune. You play Adam, a human who is destined to unite man and dinosaurs to face a greater evil. Yes, you need to rally tribes the same Paul Atreides rallies fremen troops in Dune. And with some twists, you get them working for you. Unfortunately the strategy and economy elements from Dune are gone, the progress of your rallied tribes is very linear and involves repetitve traveling and item finding.
The story has alot of potential that could have been used better. The artists created some very interesting "races", tribes of people, which are not used enough, while interacting with dinosaurs is rather underwhelming. Traveling is not very intuitive; each zone has a grid like layout made of pre-rendered 3d locations which has to be explored throroughly, sometimes more than once in order to find items, creatures or points of interests. This part of the game is the most annoying and repetitive. There are a few differences in the way you interact with the new tribes, such as miniquests, but that's all. Gone is the amazing globe/planet view from Dune, replaced with a simple 2D map which does not show you the progress of your zones/tribes. I am only saying this because the game could have been so much more. The story ends somewhat abruptly, but the ending is OK.
Get this game when is discounted.
This was my second CD-ROM game i owned, and i remember playing it alot.
I've kept the game in my collection and i tend to play it once a year.
The story is ok, maybe a bit naive at times but it works. It's not a complex game, and if you know what you are doing you can complete it in around an hour or two.
The ending is a bit anticlimatic, but this game is more about the journey.
The characters have cheesy voice overs, kinda bad, but in a so bad it's good kinda way. (Especially some of Eloi's pronunciations)
The graphics are still images from the prerendered fmv clips, and for 1995 look pretty impressive.. except for the 2d pixelart characters (though high detailed pixelart (see screenshots)) wich are nice on their own.. but with the cgi background, it doesnt always work, and at times it is very clear that they are flat 2d characters, but again (though it might just be nostalgia talking) i think it works in a charming sort of way.
But the main party piece wich most remember from this game is the music. It's typical '90s yet unique.. think Enigma or similar.
Tl;dr : humans and good dinosaurs work together fighting other bad dinosaurs and building big-ass fortresses, backed by awesome music.
A must own for any fmv fan
Should also be ripe with jokes for youtube reviews
This game was one of the first I played on the PC as a young man and it had such a profound impact on my life that it bled into my school writing and art assignments for years to come. To this day I still listen to the soundtrack in my car on the way to work. I still own the CD and can play just fine with DOSBox but I'll definitely buy again to support it here.
As for the game itself, it hasn't aged very well if I am to be honest but is charming in its own little way. The best way to enjoy this is to seclude yourself away for several hours in the dark and turn the sound way up. Lose yourself in it and the story. The mechanics are fairly easy to get used to and the puzzles, while initially intriguing can rapidly become predictable as the game progresses (with a few twists and surprises along the way).
The graphics are a mix of pixel art and primitive 3D creatures, settings and cutscenes which were pretty standard for the time. Graphics don't give this game any kind of lasting appeal in the least, but for the time they were stunning if you remember.
All in all, I'd say it's definitely worth $6 if you have some time to kill on a dark, rainy day and mark me, you'll be looking up the soundtrack on iTunes (yep it's there).
