Award-winning Black Isle Studios unleashes an epic RPG like no other. In the 12th century, a supernatural catastrophe tore the fabric of reality, unleashing spirits and magic, forever changing medieval Earth. Cast into this world and besieged by spirits and power groups, you must gain allies, take up arms and find your destiny.
To the common folk, magic was something to be feared and undoubtedly the handiwork of evil demons. People across Europe sought protection from the forces of evil and therefore relinquished utter control of their lives to the Inquisition.
To this day, the Inquisition still governs most of civilized Europe, directly or indirectly. In their relentless hunt for heretical wizards and magical creatures the Inquisition inspires awe and faith among many, and is despised and feared by others.
Choose your champion – Feralkin, Sylvant, Demonkin, or Human Pureblood – and align yourself with the Knights Templar, the Inquisition, or the Wielders. Explore 16th century Europe, twisted and changed by magic, and encounter the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo.
An original story set in a warped alternative timeline
Meet historical characters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Gallileo and Shakespeare
One of the greatest, if often overlooked, RPGs of all time
I like the fallout style RPG so finding this one was cool. The combat system is more real-time like one of the combat modes in Arcanum. Focus on combat skills first . then focus on the soft skills, otherwise you get killed too much .
Very disappointed in this game, the character never feels like they amount to much, at least not the one I was playing AND I had the guide constantly up for help and advice. Part of my disappointment is due to being so excited about discovering this game since some of my favorite games are BG, IWD, Torment, Fallout etc. but then it fell totally flat. The mechanics are never explained (to my satisfaction at least) and some of them I just could not understand like crit hit, don't have a clue what that does, at the end of the game I was over lvl 35 probably and was doing a bit over 30 dmg per hit with a two handed weapon, in my estimation I had quite a lot of crit hit chance (probably over 30 or 40) and I was hitting for more damage like once every 5 minutes. Worst of all probably is the 'knock prone' thingy that characters do (once again a mystery to me) and then it takes your little guy half an hour to pick himself up while the enemies are having their way. God forbid you actually try and fight a bunch of enemies in one go, you end up on the brink of death if you even survive unless you draw enemies out slowly, all in all a very tedious affair. Next we have insufferable corridors with archers positioned on the high ground peppering you with arrows while you have to run through the corridor to reach some bulls*** doo-dad. You actually have to hoard quite an assortment of weapons to be competitive in the slightest which I would have found one of the more fun aspects of the game were it not for the fact that you have to juggle other equipment around constantly for different tasks on top of that. The game actually looks quite charming and has an interesting premise and setting but alas, it is marred substantially by the things previously described. If only the game made you feel more powerful towards the end and combat didn't feel like such a slog I would have even been tempted to give this game 4 stars. As is, 2 stars is probably more than generous.
I have a history with this game - This must be remade!
I first played this game as a demo version in late 2003. I really liked it as the demo version really lured me in. I played it quite a few times. Then I forgot about it because I couldn't really buy the full version from anywhere as I was living in a different country then. In 2006, I saw a single boxed copy of this game being sold at a local store in their games section. I never expected this game to show up at my local store of all places and the price was incredibly high too. I kept seeing this game in it's box for a few months in that store glass display box and it kept getting to me. I eventually began to worry if it would be bought by someone else or if the store would remove it really soon. I eventually couldn't help myself and asked my big sister to buy it and after thinking about it, I really didn't expect this lone copy to be bought by anyone else as I'm pretty much one of the extremely few kids who used to play such PC games in my country.
I still have those original discs today and the manual. I have played this game many times and I keep coming back to it. I thought I last played this for my last time in 2010 but I played this again earlier this year (2012) because I found a cheat code of this game. I finished in less than 7 days and boy it was really fun to play with the tables turned against the enemies for once :). I couldn't really find the bonus CD content online anymore as I did in the past so I was kicking myself for deleting that file years ago from my PC. I didn't update my game to its most recent patch because it would have rendered the cheat code unusable. This is one of those very underrated games for sure. A game maker needs to look at this game.
This game has a lot of potential and is quite fun to play but most of the latter half takes a combat turn. Overall, this game could have been much better. I believe, the game makers were having issues during the time before the release of this so they rushed this game to the shelves. In that case, this game should have never hit the shelves because it was greatly incomplete (injustice to the game). A good game should never take a turn like Lionheart did. It started out so good and then fell apart. If your character wasn't strong enough, you would have great difficulty during the latter part of this game. For me, Lionheart is an incomplete game with tons of potential. This game could have been right up there with Age of Mythology - one of my favorites and a highly successful game from the Lionheart era.
Overall, this game is still worth playing, though it is incomplete and falls way short of it's complete potential. It was great to see this game listed here on this site. I only hope that a game maker might pick up on this game and make it again to it's full potential and with an even greater diversity. They just don't make games like this anymore. After this era, I left PC gaming for good as it all became about performance and graphics and what not.........geeeez.
Thanks for reading my rant.
Where to begin when everything has already been said? Yes, the first third of the game is quite good. You have a city to explore, NPC to talk to, sidequests to do and its quite good. Not on the Fallout 2 or Baldur's Gate 2 level but still quite enjoyable. However after you leave Barcelona for Montserrat, the game stars to change.
After that section the game becomes much more linear lacking of everything what made the Barcelona section good. No interesting sidequests, no interesting characters, just a series of brutally long dungeons with tons of enemies and no way to rest to heal. You cannot rest in a tent, you cannot even rest in inns, you just have to wait. While HP comes up fairly quickly, Mana is a completely different story. 1 single point of Mana takes 4 seconds to appear, which means, when you want to fill your Mana to the top and you have no blue element around you, you just have to wait several tens minuts! I am not kidding. Good luck when you are going for a full mage build.
While the game uses the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. RPG system known from the Fallout series, it just does not feel right in this game. Something's wrong in Lionhear, but as if you had much more control over you progress when developing your character in Fallout. Maybe it's that the game punishes you for increasing the power just in one or two categories. At the end of the game I had to use 3 points just to increase my electric magic by 1 point. I used all 21 points I got after leveling on the electric magic and it did not matter at all. The power of the magic barely increased. I have my suspicion that just some builds works here, otherwise you are doomed.
The story and the world-building were good but not even close to the perfection of Arcanum. This game has a potential but it's broken, badly designed, very rushed in the second half and dont get me started on how awfully bad your companions can be/are. The battle system is just button mashing. Nah, one of the worst RPGs ever.
