Description
Award-winning Black Isle Studios unleashes an epic RPG like no other. In the 12th century, a supernatural catastrophe tore the fabric of reality, unleashing spirits and magic, forever changing medieval Earth. Cast into this world and besieged by spirits and power groups, you must gain allies, take up arms and find your destiny.

To the common folk, magic was something to be feared and undoubtedly the handiwork of evil demons. People across Europe sought protection from the forces of evil and therefore relinquished utter control of their lives to the Inquisition.

To this day, the Inquisition still governs most of civilized Europe, directly or indirectly. In their relentless hunt for heretical wizards and magical creatures the Inquisition inspires awe and faith among many, and is despised and feared by others.

Choose your champion – Feralkin, Sylvant, Demonkin, or Human Pureblood – and align yourself with the Knights Templar, the Inquisition, or the Wielders. Explore 16th century Europe, twisted and changed by magic, and encounter the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo.
  • An original story set in a warped alternative timeline
  • Meet historical characters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Gallileo and Shakespeare
  • One of the greatest, if often overlooked, RPGs of all time

A fun underrated game

The game has a good combat system/soundtrack and I highly recommend it to a person fond of Diablo 2 style single player games, the story can be a tad flaky at times but if you don't take it too seriously you will find it entertaining.

My feelings after years ...

This is one of my childhood favourite games. I instantly fallen in love with it first time I played it. Barcelona, living, breathing city filled with intrigues, violence and magic. Every part of the city had its atmosphere, creepy beggars and christian fanatics at every corner, Inquisitors and Templars whipping tainted into obedience and keeping pure humans from slaughtering them. Wielders hiding in shadows and Goblins lurking around city walls. Meeting Machiavelli, Da Vinci and many more, learning the changed history of this magically twisted world. The game itself makes you rush deeper and deeper into it and find out more about the story, until iron fist in spiked gauntlet smashes you into face in Montserrat. Suddenly you are thrown into completelly different game, diablo styled hack n slash **** where you will realize how bad is combat system made, how slowly your mana regenerates in comparison with health, how boring is listening into one hissing attack sound every enemy in that damn monastery makes. Most of the best spells are practically useless, because you can kill a skeleton with 5 firebolts instead of one fireball and you will keep 30 mana and so on. There is no use for diplomacy, barter or other non combat skills and if you try to sneak around the enemies, you will get only 75% of the exp because you didn't kill them. Sometimes you get stuck on the ground and cannot move so the only solution is load. And your best companion in the game, Joan of Arc, will get stuck in every door so she is practically useless. Its so painful to see such great game you experienced yesterday, turning into this hell of a mess of boredom and bugs. I really love Barcelona and still play the first half of the game from time to time, but there is always that feeling of impending doom and when the time comes and the game turns into bitterness its always heartbreaking disappointment. Maybe one day I will get again into the France, to piss off the Cathars with my belly full of meat..

Memories

I'm not sure how to feel about this game. This review might be a tad strange, since I haven't played it in a very, very long time. I'm excited to see it on GOG, however, and I'm definitely going to pick it up once I've finished with Pillars of Eternity. I played this game when I was quite young. I had never played anything like it, and it was definitely one of the most difficult games I ever tried to tackle. But it was so worth it. From what I remember, much of what other reviewers are saying about it going downhill pretty fast is true. I can remember spending a lot of time and having a blast in the beginning of the game. You start in Barcelona, and you can explore the city and just do sidequests and what have you. There were lots of factions you could side with, and all sorts of crazy sidestories to experience. Honestly, I always thought the setting was really interesting. However, shortly after you exhaust all the fun (and plentiful dialogue, which was always my favorite) in Barcelona, you get to move on to the next part of the game. Suddenly this game that somehow managed to keep my interest despite being what I considered a difficult game became a huge bore. Interesting characters and dialogue opportunities were few and far between, and it seemed like I was wrestling with sleep-inducing dungeon monotony for hours upon hours. I never did finish the game. I also remember not being able to continue any further. I loved dialogue so much, I always made my character to be a super good diplomat, but once I got to later parts in the game, where combat was much more important, I was screwed. Who knows, I'll probably be much better off now since I'm older. I have SO many fond memories of this game, and it really bums me out to see it get such mediocre ratings. The game is definitely flawed, but there was so much to love about it. Not to mention Leonardo Da Vinci is a friggin wizard that belongs to a secret mage society. How sweet is that?
