Kingpin: Life of Crime

Even in its time Kingpin was a mediocre mess of a game running on the aging Quake engine, but it had a gimmick in limb dismemberment which set it apart, not to mention being practically unheard of in a 3D game in 1999 (Soldier of Fortune two years later would up the ante for gore in a shooter.) Other than that, it was a wholly forgettable game.

Kingpin is one of those games I've known about for a long time but, for some reason, never played. So it was nice to be able to give it a try, and at first, I was plesantly surprised. It looked good, had a good atmosphere and the shooting was fun. Then, I realised that the game had very little or not direction and storyline. You are given no clues of where to go and what to do, and going back and forth between areas trying to find a door or passage that would lead you somewhere new gets old pretty fast. If you are patient enough this might be the game for you, personally, I just got too frustrated with it.

This game is one of the first games I played when I got my first PC. I've played it many times since then and it always has something new to offer. I've even beaten it on the hardest difficulty setting. What I like most about it is the gritty engrossing atmosphere and the game-play. The cut scenes and the NPCs provide amazing voice acting that really adds to the experience. Sometimes they say extremely hilarious lines. It is a classic first person shooter and shooting is as fun as it gets. Do not hesitate, if for whatever reason you've never played it, buy it as soon as possible. If you've played it - play it again, it still is as fun as you remember it.

Better than Night Dive's. Go buy it.

It's just your old-school fps except the keys to open the doors are not randomly hidden in the map and some npc can "talk" thus engaging you more in a story that does not exist. I had some lust for this game in 1999 but lacked the money to buy it. Thanks to GOG, I played it 12 years later.
