A breath of fresh air

I just finished my playthrough, and let me tell ya, what a ride it was! I rarelly bother writing a review, unless game really impressed me. So, whats so special about it? Basically everything. It's fresh, it's new, and it aproaches RPG from a whole different angle. You have to eat, sleep, clean yourself, maintain your equipments etc (just like in real life). You start of as a peasant who sucks at everything and gradually you get better at things. At first the combat seems clunky, but once you figure how it all works, you cant get enough if it. I hated it in the beggining, and i almost quit the game, because every Tom,Dick, and Jerry would beat me into a pulp everywhere i went. It was very frustrating, but then i dedicated solid 2-3 hours of practicing combat with trainer guy and it finally dawned on me. Once you get it, you'll never want to go back to the usial RPG game combat format. Quests are amazing! They are meaninful stories that are a pleasure to complete. Lots of humor, great cutscenes, and just overall immersive experience. Not your typical "go there, kill that, fetch this, because whatever" format. The whole game tries to be as realistic and historically accurate as possible, i learned quite a bit of history while playing this game and it was fun. But the main advantage of this game is it's compltetly fresh and unorthodox experience, i've never played anything like that before and was great. This game is amazing, and must have for any RPG fan worth his/her salt. I am greatful to creators of this game for all the great times i had playing it.

Great open world RPG

This ranks right up there with Skyrim for me. I love open world medieval RPGs and KCD fits the bill nicely. Sure, there aren't dragons or other fantasy creatures, but it definitely let's you get lost in a more realistic historical setting. I highly recommend it.

Shines through the bugs

Yes this game is full of bugs and I'm sure if you were ever considering this game you've heard of the bugs. Some are more detrimental than others and some never encounter terrible bugs. In my experience I have had only a couple of bugged side quest and no bugged main quest. Other bugs have been minor like texture pop ins, graphical glitches, and broken stairs. I point out these bug though for a reason, even though these bugs exist the innovation and beauty of the game shine through. The combat is fun and refreshing (gets easier as you practice), the landscape is gorgeous, the lack of overtop crazy fantasy just feels so right and perfect. The dialogue is outstanding and well written and Henry's progression through this world is perfectly paced and the emotion portayed by Henry and supporting characters are spot on. The realism is so accurate it's easy to get immersed in this world and often I find myself simply going out to hunt and experience the world and it's secrets. I haven't been this excited to explore a world since oblivion and there is so much to do. Once the next patch hits and adresses the bugged quest this will easily be a 5 star game.

Excellent game, slow paced but rewarding

This game reminded me of being a kid again, sparked my imagination, and gave me some hope for the future of games set in historical periods. Kind of a paradox between nostalgia and innovation. What can you do in KCD? 1. Early on in the game I had got myself a maille hauberk and chauses. I thought I was hot stuff. Trotting along a forest road I was suddenly thrown off my horse and found myself surrounded by 5 bandits in full plate armor. I died. 2. On a hardcore playthrough I woke up early in the morning in a field surrounded by sheep. I killed one with my fists and cooked its meat on a nearby fire. Tapeworms were hungry. On release I heard about the bugs, so I waited a few months. During my first play through of the game I encountered a few, a couple minor quests that I wasn't able to complete, or my horse getting stuck inside miller Peshek's wall. Funny things mostly. This game takes time. It took 10-12 hours of playtime for the combat system to "click" for me, but once it did it became much more fun. Same with other mechanics like alchemy and archery. The game moves a bit slow, while that helps stuff like immersion, it makes it less accessible. DLC: Price is fairly high yes. Amorous Adventures got bad reviews mostly because people weren't aware of another questline added by the DLC. Not entirely their fault, Warhorse needed to communicate better.

Incredible game... one year after launch

I'm relatively late to the party with KCD, mainly because I don't buy games straightaway on release. I wait 6 months or longer for bugs to be squashed and the price to come down. Playing KCD in mid-2019 has been one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. I'm in my mid-40's and have been playing games since the early 80's, and KCD has to be in the top 3 games of all time for me. I do actually work at a medieval castle so the setting plays into my interests, but even so I'll just lay out why I think this is an excellent game to buy now. The attention to detail and historicity of the game. Voice acting is excellent, with some very funny dialogue at times. Some parts with quite esoteric gameplay. The quest in the monastery was an interesting change of pace, as was the quest with an eccentric priest. The mini-games like sharpening blades, brewing concoctions all made sense in the world and didn't break immersion. I liked the combat system. Every game with combat has to use an abstracted model of real combat in a game and I think KCD's is a good one. I think people had problems with it initially because it doesn't conform to the hack n slash paradigm that dominates action games. Combat takes patience and learning and at the end of a fight gives you a real sense of achievement, especially if you manage a combo. The graphics are beautiful, although that does come at the price of pretty hefty hardware requirements to get 60fps. The main story is good, but it was the story of the game world as a whole that was the most interesting to me. A topic of medieval history I didn't know much about. There was a few niggles in the game like guards stuck in the air, my horse getting stuck or me getting stuck in bushes (although I've had that happen in real life tbf) guards suddenly getting triggered to arrest me for no reason. Nothing major that spoiled my enjoyment though. I really recommend the game if you want something different and want a game to immerse yourself in
