Hammerwatch is a fast-paced hack and slash adventure game, inspired by classic titles of the genre. In the old, mysterious, and not-so-abandoned Castle Hammerwatch a group of heroes must fight their way up through the floors to the very top of the castle, where an ancient dragon awaits them. Not only must they kill the beast, but also get back out in one piece!

Bring back your button-mashing hack and slash skills and fight thousands of monsters while avoiding traps, findng secrets and increasing your skills on the way up. Do it yourself or bring three friends for some great fast co-op action! Feel free to launch the editor and build your own adventure with your own graphics, or try out someone else's custom level!

Multiplayer notice (Mac): Multiplayer on Mac is still being developed and might not work properly.

Hammerwatch II gets into the meat of its gameplay right away. I loved looking for better gear and never felt like I wasn't progressing toward something the entire time I played. I also loved the freedom to do side-quests when I wanted, no longer beholden to the linear story of the first Hammerwatch. Is it hard? You better believe it, but with multiple difficulty settings to choose from, anyone who is interested in Hammerwatch II won't have a problem getting into the game. With so many new RPG games this year, it's easy to see how Hammerwatch II could go unnoticed. While it might not look different, I challange anyone who is into the genre to spend two hours playing and not want to play more. If the developer can fix a couple of minor issues, like group loot in multiplayer games, this will hopefully find some legs to go the distance I feel it can.

As the title says, its a fun throwback to games of yesteryear. 'Nuff said.

Controller problems in Linux

I like this light retro crawler, but there is something wrong with the controller inputs when trying to play the game with a gamepad (8BitDo SN30 Pro+) in Linux (Manjaro). Every other action seemingly works, but I can't move, which ... kind of makes it unplayable. The gamepad works with other games in Linux (and in Windows).

Gauntlet, with some RPG Elements

I've played Hammerwatch on Windows 7, Mac OSX Yosemite, and Linux Mint 17.3. All ran the game just fine and even played nicely with a Logitech F310 (DInput on Windows and Mac, XInput on Windows and Linux Mint). PROS: + Fun dungeon crawling with no shortage of action. + Environmental puzzles will test your noggin but not your nerves. + Diverse character classes to tinker with, adding variety. + Plenty of hidden areas worth exploring. + Sun Temple Expansion adds even more. + Modest hardware requirements. + Online multiplayer, if that's your thing. CONS: - Online multiplayer can be cumbersome to set up. VERDICT: If you already like dungeon crawlers, grab Hammerwatch.
