Excellent

(Disclaimer: I own this on Steam not GOG). This is by far an excellent implementation of the old school hacking game, similar to Uplink but with a few quality of life improvements which reflect the times we live in. The gameplay is what you'd expect, you have a command line interface working with your computer, remoting into other systems and executing commands as you need to. For those less command line savvy, there is a fully functional (and convenient) GUI interface as well which lets you interact with the systems and files. I often found myself using a combination of the two, preferring the CLI for most functions but some (like directory manipulation) was easier with the keyboard. The game does a good job of keeping the gameplay realistic - obviously the exploits you use are simplified relative to the real world where patches are issued and different systems are vulnerable to different exploints due to them running a different version of the target software. But, overall, it feels like you are actually working with a genuine bash terminal (without some of the obvious commands you might want to use). Only drawback to this realism is tab completion in subdirectories, but hey it is a simulated CLI after all. The story is interesting, detailed, and enjoyable. The obstacles are though provoking - you do have to solve a few problems now and then; not doctoral in difficulty but also not always trivial either. Knowledge of modern iOS systems helps (alpine, anybody?) but is not essential. For those who did like uplink, you'll be disappointed to learn that there is no hardware management - you don't upgrade your CPU or memory. It may have been a nice touch, but the game accounts for this by improving your software over time (thus doing a task with fewer instances of a shell required, etc.) Solid game, give it a go. You won't regret it. I've had zero stability issues with it. And the soundtrack is to die for, by the way. If nothing else, pick that up!

Excellent, but maybe not for everyone

I never thought I would write a review about a game were the main thing you will to will be to stare and a screen and type. But Hacknet does it very well. The game immersion is incredible : you don't control a hero or character as you are yourself typing and controlling your computer. The interface, graphics, effects and sounds really reinforce the immersion and are coherent with the theme of the game, going as far as making you even sometimes panic in the moments of urgency. The narration is nothing mindblowing but very good itself and delivered in a unique way as you solve the puzzles and find files in different computers. There are also a lot of hidden random conversations that you can find and if you take the time to read, will probably make you chuckle. The DLC is more hacknet slightly beefed up and is something I liked myself, but I would only recommend to buy it if you liked hacknet. The music however is seriously really good in both the base game and DLC and I would highly recommend you to buy the OST with the game. Again, not a game for everyone, but in my case I absolutely loved it. If you are skeptic, I would recommend you to buy it on sale as it's a steal. Be warned however, this is not a hacking simulator, but does retransmit the feeling of being a badass hollywood hacker really well.

Excellent Hacker-narrative

I really enjoyed this game a lot, particularly with a cup of coffee. The story and narrative where surprisingly engaging and complex; even the characters showed a lot of personality via just chat messages. The "hacking" gameplay, sometimes with time pressure, was also really fun. Combined, the gameplay and narrative, really highlighted a lot of privacy issues and other dangers our connected world entails.

A game for script kiddies and sexists

Bought on gog because some customer here wrote that it uses real unix commands and is realistic at all, it is _not_, already requested a refund. Played ~8 hours. A game made by script kiddies, for script kiddies. Inhuman - you can found irc log files on the computers, i've found several sexistic stuff against women and homophob stuff, probably there's even more... Buggy - after loading the game, all so called shells you opened are gone, (that's not a bug, it's a feature!!1!eleven! makes the game so hard yeah!11!) - terminal history is bugged (press arrow key up one time and it often goes two or three entries back) - the autocompletion is not working everywhere with every command, for example double tab to show all files and dirs in the given directory - a lot of translations issues in the german localisation Unlogical - when not connected to any computer, remote connection is possible - interface is called xserver (a gui), but you can't view images like png files - so called 'shells' can be set up on computers to create something like a botnet for ddos, but they eat the ram of _your_ computer... - you have read and write access to logfiles, even when you are not root - on upload servers, you can upload files (thats write permission) can't read them (permission denied), but delete them (write permission again) - no options for commands, like 'rm -r' - 'always delete the logs to stay safe blah', is totally dump, everyone would notice that someone were there and deleted logs! the logs logging connections and logins and logouts, so when you delete everything and then disconnect, the disconnect would be logged but it isn' t in this game Annoying / Boring - the whole game is about running a specific exe-file (lol) in a specific order, often before a countdown ends - visualisation of the available computers is a mess and confusing (look at some of the screenshots, at the left bottom the big dots)

Buggy and unstable

I bought the ultimate collection and tried to play it 3 times on a 64 bit Windows Pro machine, it resulted in the system having a catastrophic failure (blue screen) and hard reboot 3 times about 5 minutes into the game. I am not impressed with the games GOG are putting on their site.
