Explore this Lovecraft-inspired world that is full of side areas and secret places, and uncover the entire story to solve the mystery of this crazy place.
Feeling of classic FPS from the 90s
Timelapse animations, opponents and elements of 2D in a 3D environment; first aid kits and life points, non-reloading weapons, powerups during dynamic combat with numerous opponents.
Custom combat experience
With scripture in one hand and weapons powered by an unknown substance in the other, the player will face the challenge of maintaining their humanity. It is up to the player to decide how their equipment evolves, and to find ways of defeating hordes of unpredictable opponents.
Dynamic level of madness
Directly influencing not only the audio-visual experience, but the gameplay itself, its effect varies depending on the current level of player’s madness.
The game is presented in a comic book style
Hand-drawn graphics designed to maintain a distinctive comic book look, where any screenshot from the game could be a part of a new comic book.
Mood straight from Lovecraft's dark novels
All throughout the game, the player will feel the atmosphere of dread and horror that the works of H.P. Lovecraft are renowned for. Surrounded by the occult and forces of eternal evil, experience the feelings of hopelessness, madness and confusion, and the burning need to find answers and bring back some semblance of reason and sanity to the world.
Many climatic levels and a varied bestiary
A diverse world entirely made by hand, full of interesting enemies ranging from possessed inhabitants to monsters straight out of your worst nightmares.
Two heroes to choose from
Each with their own, unique development tree. Experience the story from the perspective of either a priest or a journalist.
The visuals and sound design in this game are fantastic. It perfectly nails the Lovecraftian aesthetic, and everything is suitable creepy, dark, and violent. There is a large variety of enemies and they are all impressive in their design. That being said, the actual gameplay is just "meh."
This is a very basic "Doom-like" shooter. It's as much fun as your average Doom mod/WAD, and it actually less interesting than the BEST Doom mods that are out there!
A lot of the weapon upgrades are not very impressive, and while they change the look of the gun (which again, is very cool) they don't really change how the gun is used in any serious way, so they are just straight damage upgrades. These kinds of upgrades just seem like a waste of time. I would much rather just find an upgraded gun, instead of dealing with a "skill tree" or whatever it's called.
The characters have special abilities, and again, they just aren't interesting. I made the mistake of playing as the Priest, which is obviously not the character the developer wants you to play as.
While there is enemy variety, their AI is very basic. There are just two basic types: enemies that shoot at your from far away, and enemies that rush you in a straight line. It's not a bad game by any means, but it just didn't hold my attention like other retro boomer shooters have. I will likely buy and try the sequel as well, to see if I like it better.
This and Viscerafest are two best in dev retro-ish FPS titles of 2021.
Lovecraft would be proud, Yes it is sort of linear-ish gun blazing affair but it's very good already with very nice presentation* and immersive semi-horror atmosphere.
Guns, being meat of the game, even the basic ones feel great and have use middle of the game with very neat unlocking "choose one loose one" branching system. Other additional skill abilities are also nice and feel "right" and theme-consistent.
Audio is great.
*gamedev art guy's nitpicking comes here: Darkest Dungeon style enemies' thick lined art might be not everyone's cup of tea (mine wasn't till I actually played the game) and there are some visual inconsistencies -my personal gripe being too frequent use of bloom effect stands as out of place in certain areas (town windows etc). So are certain 3D scenery elements/props like occasional bed or piping, especially when the shading gets broken. You'll know when you see it.
Also at least 4-directional enemy sprites would also be neat to have.
I had more fun with this cool game than when playing Doom Eternal.
Awesome idea both visually and from plot point of view; good music to set the mood and environmental sounds to set this horrifying mood and be disturbed by horde of not quite dead but definitely mutated... people.
Very well done.
For a long time I was yearning for a game that can re-ignite the passion for playing. This game did that. I love the theme, the mechanichs and the music. I do feel that I am part of a lovecraftian story while it also serves me the oldshool shooting experience. Really nice touch also the levelling system and the voice and the comments of the priest is also nice to hear.
